Anglers host Harwich after exhilarating walk-off win

John Schiffner stepped away from the interview and whistled for his players’ attention.

They were scattered about the field. Some already digging into the team meal, others walked toward the dugout and a small group stood in the spot of the postgame huddle, trying to milk everything out of the game that had just transpired. When he had their divided attention, he motioned his hands up-and-down and said, “none of this tomorrow guys.” His team had just won on a walk-off home run by A.J. Murray (Georgia Tech) in the top of the 12th, but another regular-season game — in a sea of 44 — was already less than 24 hours away.

He was reminding them to stay even-keeled.

“This is fun, getting to celebrate a win like this,” Schiffner said. “But we have to play tomorrow. They’ll be ready.”

The party started with a mobbing of Murray at home plate and permeated into the rest of the night. With the team gone and his coaching staff still in the dugout, Schiffner broke into one last celebration on the fringe of the left-field grass. He threw his hands above his head and let out a “whoo” that echoed throughout the empty Veterans Field. Then he straightened out and, like he told his players to do, set his sights on the next one.

Chatham (8-8-1) will face first-place Harwich (11-6) at Veterans Field at 7 p.m. Monday night, which will be the second time the Anglers host the Mariners in four days. Harwich beat Chatham 10-4 in that game to bump the season series to 2-0 in its favor, and Andrew Chin (Boston College) will start for the hosts in the third installment.

The Anglers haven’t been able to solve the Mariners’ steadfast concoction of hitting of pitching, but now have an indelible win to work off of.

“I think that it definitely brings the team closer,” said Nick Collins (Georgetown), who hit a game-tying single in the eighth inning that made Murray’s heroics possible. “I think we are already close but this kind of win does that, too. It can never hurt.”
