Chatham looks to carry offensive success into 1st meeting with Hyannis

Even though the team is 2-2 in its last four games, the Anglers’ offense is on some kind of four-game streak. Starting with a 16-14 win over Yarmouth-Dennis on Tuesday, Chatham has now collected 13 or more hits in its last four contests — a trend that will naturally turn into positive results.

“Did we have more than 10 hits against tonight?” said center fielder Landon Cray (Seattle) as he turned to look at the scoreboard after the Anglers lost to Brewster, 5-4, on Saturday. “Yeah we did. We are just hitting well right now.”

The final hit total for that game was an even 13, the lofty standard Chatham (7-8-1) has set as it nestles into the season. The Anglers will face Hyannis (10-6) for the first time this season, a 7 p.m. game at Veterans Field on Sunday night. Charlie Dant (Dayton) will start for Chatham and Jordan Minch will take the mound for the Harbor Hawks and be tasked with slowing the Anglers’ offense down.

“The guys have kept up a great plate approach,” Chatham manager John Schiffner said after the loss to the Whitecaps. “We only scored four runs tonight but if we keep taking that approach we’ll be able to get some across.”

After Saturday, the Anglers lead the league in hits with 150 and runs with 85, and RBIs with an even 70. Harwich, the next closest team in total runs, is 10 behind. And maybe most remarkably, Chatham has done so with a middling six home runs. The Anglers have replaced the long ball with a league-leading .387 on-base percentage — spearheaded by Patrick Mazeika (Stetson), whose .524 OBP is a clearcut league best.

Schiffner has said on multiple occasions that his team talks over the opposing pitcher in the dugout all game, and that he believes that has translated into its success at the plate. He was also once noticeably ho hum about a home run and that mindset has certainly been personified by his team.

“Yeah a home run is great and I’m not going to turn one down,” Schiffner said. “But that’s not what it’s all about, it’s about having a good at-bat and doing the right thing in each situation.”
