A's Clip Cotuit 3-2

by Kyle Whitehead, 07-08-2007

A's Clip Cotuit 3-2 Chatham got another quality start from Tom Milone (USC) and just enough offense to squeak by Cotuit 3-2 Sunday night at Lowell Park.

After giving up two runs in the first inning on four hits, Milone settled in and allowed only two singles the rest of the way. The Trojan went seven strong for the win, surrendering only the two runs on five hits.

Milone got plenty of help from his catcher Tim Federowicz (UNC). On the day, Federowicz picked off two Cotuit baserunners and also caught two Kettleers stealing, all at crucial points in the game.

The first came in the first inning. After the first four Cotuit hitters reached base, the Kettleers had runners on first and third with nobody out, already leading 2-0. With Reese Havens (South Carolina) at the plate, Federowicz threw down to first to pick off Caleb Joeseph (Lipscomb) and record the first out of the ballgame. Millone came back to strike out Havens and eventually escaped the inning trailing by only two runs.

In the fifth, Ryan Lollis singled to start the inning but Federowicz quickly disposed of him with a 2-3 pickoff as well. Millone again came back to retire the next three batters and keep the Cotuit run total at two.

Federowicz also caught Havens stealing in the fifth and picked off Aaron Baker (Oklahoma) in the eighth to cap off a tremendous day behind the dish.

Chatham scored its first two runs of the ballgame in the second. Allan Dykstra (Wake) and Zach Putnam (Michigan) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Sean O'Brien (Virginia Tech) then came to the plate and drove home Dykstra with a single. After Kevin McAvoy (Maine) reached base on an error by Cotuit catcher Robert Stock (USC) on a sac-bunt attempt, the A's had the bases loaded with one out for Andrew Crisp (South Carolina). Crisp put the bat on the ball and drove home Putnam with a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2.

The A's grabbed the lead with a two-out rally in the fourth. McAvoy singled to get things going and Crisp followed with a single of his own. Addison Johnson (Clemson) gave Chatham the lead with a double down the right field line that plated McAvoy.

Milone and the bullpen would make that 3-2 lead hold, but it was not easy.

In the ninth, Cotuit had the tying run on second and the winning run on first with one out against reliever Rob Wooten (UNC). Wooten got Jonathan Pigott (Florida) to fly out but then walked Stock to load the bases. After a lengthy at bat, Wooten finally retired Ryan Lollis on an infield pop up to earn the save.

Chatham is back home tomorrow night to take on the Brewster Whitecaps at 7pm. Ryan Hinson (Clemson) hurls for Chatham against Erik Davis (Stanford).
