Notebook: Pitching bolsters Anglers in 2nd win of week

Chatham (3-4) won its second straight game Wednesday, a 4-1 victory over Yarmouth-Dennis in front of 597 fans at Red Wilson Field. After the game, Nick Collins (Georgetown) said that while it feels good to win in back-to-back days, three wins make a streak. The Anglers aren’t there yet, but another all-around win against the Red Sox further pushed them in the right direction.

At the plate

The Chatham lineup was mostly impressive in the field Wednesday, but still put together an eight-hit effort at the dish. A.J. Murray (Georgia Tech) started the team with a two-run home run in the top of the first — the Anglers’ first of the season — and RBIs from Chris Shaw (Boston College) and Ty Moore (UCLA) also contributed to Chatham’s final line. Blake Butera (Boston College), whose .333 average leads the team, went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Butera and Moore, who hit one and two in the order respectively, combined to go 4-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI.

“Once we got ahead it just seemed like we got loose and the hits came,” Murray said. “We got runs across from there.”

On the mound

Jordan Hillyer (Kennesaw State) made the start for the Angers and was impressive in his Cape Cod League debut. The tall righty threw five innings and gave up just one hit and one run, working his fastball and slider to do so. He said after the game that while he was confident in the two-pitch combination, it was his breaking ball that helped him to the good performance despite allowing four walks.

“The slider was really working,” Hillyer said. “When I can throw that I’m going well.”

Hillyer was relieved by Lou Distasio (Rhode Island) in the sixth inning, and Distasio worked through three scoreless innings while issuing a lone hit. He too worked his breaking pitches while commanding his fastball, and was especially effective working the outside of the plate against right-handed pitchers. Distasio set the table for Kyle Davis (Southern California), who appeared for the second consecutive game and stymied Y-D with his four-pitch arsenal.

“Kyle was great as he has been all year,” Distasio said. “He throws some great stuff.”

Up next

The Anglers will look to keep rolling along against Harwich (6-1) at Whitehouse Field at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The game was originally scheduled for last Friday until rain moved it to this week, and the Mariners are now winners of three straight. They also hold the league’s best record most recently beating Hyannis 6-3 on Wednesday night. PointStreak, the official scorers of the league, says that P.J. Conlon (San Diego) will start for the Anglers and Jason Inghram — the Cape’s reigning pitcher of the week — for Harwich.
