Chatham hosts Brewster with hopes to snap losing streak

John Schiffner noted progress after his team dropped both games of a double header against Cotuit on Sunday. He said that unlike its loss to Orleans the night before, he was relatively pleased with the way Chatham competed in the 14 innings of the twin bill.

“I thought we were better today,” Schiffner said Sunday night. “We’re getting there, we did some good things today.”

The problem for Chatham (1-4) has been putting all the “good things” together at one time, which it will look to do against Brewster (3-2) at 7 p.m. Tuesday night. The Anglers have dropped four in a row at Veterans Field since an opening-night win at Eldredge Park in Orleans, and will have another shot to end its home — and overall — losing streak before going on the road for the majority of the week.

Chatham had off Monday while Brewster beat Hyannis 7-4 in the league’s only game, and the Anglers will hope that rest and rejuvenation is the antidote to its early-season struggles. Andrew Chin (Boston College) will make his start of the season after not earning a decision in the Anglers' only win, and Cody Ponce will take the mound for the Whitecaps.

“We’re still figuring it out,” said left-handed pitcher Max Tishman (Wake Forest), who pitched admirably in the second game of the doubleheader. “It’s a long season and we’re going to be good. We all know that.”

Tishman’s confidence in the Anglers stretches across the roster. The players have continually acknowledged the length of the season, the nature of baseball and the influence of time. In all likelihood, Chatham’s slow start won’t slide into the summer that lies ahead.

But the team is still looking for the performance that will, if only momentarily, alleviate its current skid. The Anglers’ bats were hot out of the gate in a 10-2 win over Orleans on Opening Day but hits, and subsequently runs, have been at a premium since. Chatham has found ways to get on base and create scoring opportunities, yet the hit that could crush the team-wide slump remains elusive.

Everyday is a chance to hit, pitch and field out of a funk, and the day will come. If anything, the Anglers are sure of that.

“We just need to keep playing and the wins will start coming,” infielder Blake Butera (Boston College) said. “It’s baseball, we’ve all been here.”
