Chatham welcomes doubleheader against Cotuit to snap out of funk

Chatham welcomes doubleheader against Cotuit to snap out of funk

After the Anglers fell to Orleans on Saturday night, a mutual feeling toward the next day’s doubleheader permeated in front of an otherwise quiet dugout.

Manager John Schiffner, as well as three of his players, all said that two games on the heels of a second-straight lopsided loss is just what the team needs. Chatham has only played three games in a season that has hardly learned to walk, but it’s hit a noticeable lull that more baseball can remedy.

“I always think it’s better to just keep playing,” said Mitch Gonsulus (Gonzaga), who has seen time in the infield and outfield already this summer. “That’s better than just sitting around thinking about it.”

The Anglers (1-2) will host the Cotuit Kettleers (1-2) for a doubleheader on Sunday, with the first of two seven-inning games starting at 4 p.m. at Veterans Field. Chatham will throw Tanner Scott (Howard) before Max Tishman (Wake Forest) takes the mound for the second leg. The Anglers are winless at home so far this season — dropping its opener against Wareham and second meeting with Orleans — and will look to use 14 innings to rectify its play at the plate and on the mound.

“I think it will definitely help us if we can come out and roll in the first game,” said right fielder Chris Shaw (Boston College). “And then after that we just need to carry it into the second game.”

Chatham was set to bounce back a day after its 13-3 loss to Wareham on Thursday night, but an away game at Harwich was rained out and moved to this coming Thursday. Schiffner said before the Orleans game that he wasn’t sure if the unscheduled off day would help or hurt his team, but decided after it that it must have thrown them off.

“I guess it hurt,” he said. “We were alright against Wareham, we competed and then things kind of fell apart. But we were flat (Saturday) so we’ll need to compete Sunday.”

Following the Anglers’ most recent hiccup is what could be considered the direct opposite of an off day. One game will be sliced into two and a traditional nine innings stretched to 14 — and even though the summer’s just beginning, the doubleheader’s well-timed.
