Hyannis Strikes Again, Defeats Chatham 8-3
The Hyannis Mets beat up on A's pitching again Thursday night, scoring eight runs on 11 hits to defeat Chatham 8-3 at Veteran's Field.

The teams met for the first time five nights ago in Hyannis and produced a similar result. The Mets won that game 11-8 at McKeon Park.

Trailing 2-0, the hit barrage started for Hyannis in the fifth. James Darnell (South Carolina) led off with a double off A's starter Charles Brewer (UCLA) and moved to third with one out on a bunt single from Joey Gonzales (Cal-Riverside). Kiki Vazquez (Central Florida) took advantage of the RBI opportunity and hit a sac fly to right to slice the deficit in half, 2-1.

Hyannis scored another in the sixth to tie on an RBI single from Shane Peterson (Long Beach St.) and took the lead on an odd play in the seventh. With runners at the corners and one out, the Mets attempted a safety squeeze with catcher Dale Cornstubble (Central Florida) at the plate. Cornstubble laid down a soft bunt that died right in front of the plate. Chatham catcher Tim Federowicz pounced on the ball and dove back toward home plate attempting to tag Dan Brewer (Bradley) trying to score from third. The tag was too late and Brewer scored to give Hyannis a 3-2 lead.

Charles Brewer left the game after seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking none and striking out six.

The Mets broke the game open in the eighth off reliever Matt Giannini (Rutgers). Scott Elmendorf led off with a double and Peterson followed with a single. After Darnell flew out to drive in a run, Brewer hit a hard ground ball right at third baseman Trey Watten (Abilene Christian). The ball went through Watten's legs and into left field, allowing Brewer to reach base on the E5. Hyannis then got RBI singles from Gonzales and Cornstubble and they led 6-2 after eight.

A Darnell two-run homer in the ninth would push the lead to 8-2 before Chatham rallied a bit in their final turn at-bat. Already one run in, the A's had the bases loaded against closer Tyler Stohr (North Florida) with just one out. Zach Putnam (Michigan) hit a hard ground ball to short, however, that turned into game ending double play.

Chatham scored the first two runs of the ballgame in the fourth on RBI groundouts from Federowicz and Watten.

The A's are back in action Friday night at Veteran's Field against the first place Y-D Red Sox. Cliff Springston (Arkansas) starts for Chatham and will be opposed by Eddie Burns (Georgia Tech).
