Mets Batter A's 11-8
Starting pitching had not been the problem for Chatham.
The A's bullpen came in reeling after three consecutive blown saves, but they did not get an opportunity to redeem themselves Sunday night at McKeon Park as starter Tom Millone (USC) was shelled and the A's fell 11-8 to Hyannis.
The A's have now lost two in a row and, with two ties prior to that, have not won since defeating Wareham last Tuesday night.
Millone had been stellar in his first two starts, both victories against the Orleans Cardinals, but struggled from the start against Hyannis. The Mets touched him up for four runs in the first with the key hit being a bases clearing triple from cleanup hitter Shane Peterson (Long Beach St.) that plated three. Peterson then scored on a 6-3 putout off the bat of first baseman Kiko Vazquez (Central Florida) and the Mets led 4-0.
The Mets added two more in the second on RBI singles from Dan Brewer (Bradley) and James Darnell (South Carolina) to put the A's in a 6-0 hole.
Chatham got on the board with a run in the third on a single from Sean O'Brien (Virginia Tech) and scored another in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Addison Johnson (Clemson). That would be all the offense the A's could manage against Met starter Andrew Doyle (Oklahoma), who left the game after six innings with Hyannis leading 11-2.
The A's offense showed some fight in the seventh against Met reliever Stephen Penney (UC Riverside). Chatham scored five runs on four hits, a walk and an error by Hyannis shortstop Ryan Jackson (Miami). Richie Tri (Central Connecticut St.) singled in two of those runs in his last at-bat as an A. Tri left the team after last night's game and will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a torn meniscus.
Chatham scratched their eighth run across in the ninth but it was too little, too late, as the pitching staff had put the A's in too deep of a hole.
Tarheels Tim Federowicz (UNC) and Kyle Seger (UNC) both got their first starts of the season and both singled in their first Cape League at-bats. Federowicz finished the game 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored.
After an off day Monday, the A's get back on the field Tuesday night at home against the Falmouth Commodores. First pitch is 7pm at Veteran's Field.
