Gatemen Offense Explodes in Blowout Loss for Chatham
You might not expect it from looking at the records, but the Wareham Gatemen (8-27-1) had no trouble handing the Chatham Anglers (24-11-1) an 11-6 loss on Sunday Night at Veterans Field.

We came out and put up a stinker tonight, Manager John Schiffner. It happens. We did not play well all around tonight, but I think we will be fine.

The Anglers had easily handled the lowly Gatemen in the first three meetings of the season, but could not complete the season sweep, as they were blown out by last-place Wareham.

The Gatemen broke it open, scoring early and often against Andrew Chin (Boston College) and the Anglers pitching staff, tallying 9 runs in the first three innings.

Box Score

Game 36: Chatham 6, Wareham 11

Wareham chased Chin after he gave up four runs before recording an out in the second inning. Left-fielder Adam Toth contributed a two-RBI double for the Gatemen in their big inning.

The Anglers started to chip away with a run in the next frame, but the Gatemen exploded for five more runs in the third inning.

Chin allowed six hits and four runs in one inning of work, and was handed his first loss of the season.

On the other hand, Wareham starter Kurt McCune (LSU) held the Anglers offense to two runs over five solid innings.

Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) continued his hot start after his return from Team USA, collecting four hits and an RBI. Gatemen shortstop Ethan Gross had three hits and four RBI of his own.

The Anglers tried to make it interesting towards the end of the game, loading the bases with no outs and would get three runs behind RBI hits from Mitch Gunsolus (Gonzaga), William Head (Appalachian State), and Brett Bell (Texas Tech), making it an 11-6 game. Chatham would get no closer, and was dealt its 11th loss of the season.

Facing a large deficit early, Schiffner was still pleased with how the team handled the game.

They were still going out there and playing hard, Schiffner said. There really is no giving up with these guys.

Gunsolus and Jimmy Pickens (Michigan State) were some of the lone bright spots for the Anglers on Sunday Night. Gunsolus had three hits and scored a run, and Pickens had two hits, including a solo home run.

Despite the tough loss, Schiffner sees the game as one that the team can build on, and has no doubt that they can rebound quickly.

We have not had a problem with coming back the next day and playing well, so I think we will be just fine, Schiffner said.

The Anglers will look to rebound tomorrow, as they travel to Falmouth to take on the Commodores. First pitch at 7 p.m. Tune into the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. for live coverage with broadcasters Brandon Liebhaber and Keith Zubrow at TRZ Teamline or call 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
