Bullpen Implodes Again in 5-5 Tie with Brewster
For the A's, it was d''j'' vu all over again Friday night in Brewster.

One day after allowing Y-D to score six in the final frame to tie, the Chatham bullpen surrendered four runs in the bottom of the ninth before darkness ended the game in a 5-5 tie.

Leading 5-1 headed to the bottom of the ninth, Mitch Houck (Central Florida) started the inning for Chatham. Already having worked two innings of scoreless relief, Houck hit the first batter he faced and exited the game.

Bryan Shaw (Long Beach St.) came in to close out what looked to be an easy win for the A's, but the Whitecaps had other ideas. First, Ryan Babineau (UCLA) doubled and Bryan Wiley (Kent St.) singled to get the scoring started and bring Brewster within three. Shaw bounced back to retire the top two hitters in the order, Blake Tekotte (Miami) and pinch hitter Austin Yount (Stanford), before Yonder Alonso (Miami) came to the plate with the tying runs on base.

The Brewster first baseman timed Shaw's fastball perfectly and drove a base hit to right to bring the Whitecaps within one. The final straw was a wild pitch that allowed pinch runner Charlie Cutler (California) to come home and cap off the incredible comeback.

The umpires called the game after nine innings due to darkness at Stony Brook Field.

Lost in the madness was another great outing for an A's starter. Cliff Springston (Arkansas) threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six. The lefty did not allow a base hit until the fifth inning.

On the offensive side, Jermaine Curtis (UCLA) stayed hot with a RBI triple in the third. He came around to score on a base hit from another hot hitter, outfielder Sean O'Brien (Virginia Tech), and the A's led 2-0.

The lead stretched to 4-0 in the sixth when Zach Putnam (Michigan) crushed a ball over the left field fence for a two-run jack. It was Putnam's first home run and first RBIs on the Cape.

After Brewster got on the board with a David Doss (South Alabama) RBI single in the sixth, the A's responded with an insurance run in the eighth to push the lead to 5-1 before the bullpen blew it for the second straight day.

Chatham returns home Saturday night at 7pm to face the Bourne Braves.
