Offense Silent, Chatham's Four-Game Win Streak Snapped

by Chris Jones, 07-16-2013

Offense Silent, Chatham's Four-Game Win Streak Snapped The Chatham Anglers (19-9-1) had their four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Harwich Mariners pitching staff, who held the Anglers offense to no runs and three hits.

"We just didn't have it tonight," Manager John Schiffner said. "We faced a great pitching staff. Its the Cape League, it happens."

Mariners starter Chandler Shepherd (Kentucky) stymied the Chatham lineup, only allowing three hits while striking out eight over six shutout innings.

Box Score

Game 29: Chatham 0, Harwich 3

Johnathan Frebis (Middle Tennessee St) came in after Shepherd, but it would yield similar results for the Anglers offense, as Frebis would not allow a hit and strike out three in two innings pitched.

Harwich closer Chris Oliver (Arkansas) finished off the Anglers, striking out the side in the ninth inning.

"Their pitchers were able to do a lot of things right," Schiffner said. "We battled, but we couldn't really do much with them."

It was a "staff day" for the Anglers, as Jimmy Litchfield (UC Irvine) got the start, but was followed by five different Anglers relievers.

After Litchfield and Chad Sobotka (South Carolina Upstate) kept the Mariners offense at bay through four innings, Jacob Dorris (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) struggled in the fifth inning, giving up four hits and three runs in his only inning of work.

The Mariners would do all of their scoring against Dorris in the fifth inning, and would go on to win the game 3-0. This is the fourth time the Anglers have been shutout so far this season, the last time coming against Orleans on July 3, also by a 3-0 score.

Harwich was able to steal seven bases against Chatham in their 3-0
win on Tuesday, including five in the fifth inning.
"Dorris just didn't seem to have it tonight, and they took advantage of that," Schiffner said. "I still like the way all of our guys threw."

The Anglers were plagued by errors and defensive miscues, as they committed two errors in the game, and had multiple situations where the ball was misplayed.

"We kicked around the ball a little tonight," Schiffner said. "We were not very sharp defensively tonight."

Harwich also collected a staggering seven stolen bases against Chatham, five of them coming in the fifth inning.

"One thing we really need to work on is runner control," Schiffner said. "Those guys can run, and they showed that tonight."

There were some positives to take away, as the Anglers lineup continued to draw walks at a large rate. They drew six tonight against Harwich pitching, and lead the league by a large margin in that category.

With the loss, Harwich moves to within seven points of the Anglers for first place in the Eastern Division.

Chatham will have an off-day on Wednesday, then will be back in action on Thursday against the Western Division-leading Cotuit Kettleers (18-11)

Despite the loss, Schiffner has no doubt that his team can rebound well after the day off.

"We're fine. We had an off night where we faced some great pitchers. The guys will come out on Thursday and play hard to win," Schiffner said.
