Pitching Staff Carries A's Past Wareham 5-2

by Kyle Whitehead, 06-27-2007

Pitching Staff Carries A's Past Wareham 5-2 After slipping up Monday night against Cotuit, the A's got back on the winning track Tuesday by topping Wareham 5-2 at Spillane Field.

Allan Dykstra's (Wake) two-RBI bloop single broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth and put Chatham ahead for good. Dykstra, who did not start for the first time this year, was pinch hitting for Zach Zaneski (Rhode Island).

Chatham starter Gavin Brooks (UCLA) was magnificent. The Bruin made it look easy, working very quickly and consistently pitching from ahead in the count. He went six innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out 10.

Wareham's Andy Oliver (Oklahoma St.) was just as good in his six innings of work. The A's scored their two runs off Oliver in the top of the third when Jermaine Curtis (UCLA) smoked a double into the gap to score Addison Johnson (Clemson) and Scott Lyons (Arkansas). Curtis was 3 for 4 on the day and had another RBI base hit in the top of the ninth to stretch the A's lead to 5-2.

As has been the case all season, the Chatham bullpen got the job done after Brooks exited the game in the seventh. Kevin Couture (USC) came in and faced the minimum in two innings while striking out two. Bryan Shaw (Long Beach St.) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the season.

After an open date Wednesday, Chatham is back in action Thursday at 5pm in Y-D. Another Bruin, Charles Brewer (UCLA), will be on the hill for the A's while Steve Dodson (Georgia) will get the start for the Red Sox. In the second game of the season, Dodson was perfect through six against Chatham before allowing a run on a hit in the seventh. The Red Sox got the victory 4-1.
