Early Offense, Dominant Bullpen Key in Anglers Win Over Y-D
The Chatham Anglers (18-8-1) won a wild game on Sunday night at Veterans Field, as they defeated the Y-D Red Sox (12-14-1) by the final score of 8-5.

Early offense, great defense, and an impressive performance from the bullpen was the difference, as the Anglers picked up their third consecutive win.

After Chatham starter Andrew Chin (Boston College) retired the side in order in the first inning, both offenses took over the game.

The Anglers struck first, as the first four batters reached base against Y-D starter Kyle Wood (Purdue), resulting in three runs for Chatham. The first run scored on a balk from Wood, and two came in on a single from J.D Davis (Cal State Fullerton).

Before an out was recorded, Chatham had four hits and three runs.

"I think we just all really felt comfortable at the plate," Davis said. "Everybody was hitting, which gave us a lot of confidence."

Y-D charged right back in the next frame with four runs of their own, all coming off of Chin after he had retired the first two batters. The Red Sox had turned what had looked to be a rout into a 4-3 lead.

The Anglers scored early and often against Y-D. compiling
seven runs and nine hits in the first two innings.

The Anglers answered right back, scoring four runs of their own in the next frame, behind a bases-clearing hit from Connor Joe (San Diego), and an RBI double from Davis.

Wood would only retire four batters in his outing, in which he gave up six hits and five runs. Chatham had a 7-5 lead going into the third inning.

After only two innings, both teams combined for 11 runs and 14 hits.

After Chin gave up a leadoff walk, Manager John Schiffner made the call to the bullpen. In two innings pitched, Chin had given up five hits and five runs, but Schiffner thought he pitched a lot better than his final line indicated.

"I thought he pitched pretty well, despite what the scoreline might say," Schiffner said. "He was throwing well, I liked the way he pitched, but he had some bad luck and some calls that didn't go his way."

In a wild game where the offense ruled early on, Chatham's bullpen was lights-out.

Dominic Moreno (Texas Tech) came in and pitched three shutout innings, only allowing one hit and four strikeouts.

Jacob Dorris (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) struck out three and did not allow a hit through two innings.

Kyle Funkhouser (Louisville) then came in and closed out the game for Chatham, throwing two scoreless innings while striking out one.

"I can not say enough about the job the bullpen did," Schiffner said. "Moreno set the stage, and Dorris and Funkhouser followed with great performances. Outstanding job by all of them."

The bullpen has been a strongpoint for the Anglers all season, and it is their talent and versatility that Schiffner is most impressed with.

"We have guys in the bullpen that can start, close, and give us innings when we need them to," Schiffner said. "As a coach, that is an outstanding thing to have."

The Anglers would add an insurance run in the eighth inning off of a wild pitch that scored Rich Prigatano (Long Beach State). Chatham would finish the game with eight runs and 13 total hits.

Davis would finish the game with two hits and four RBI.

J.D Davis (Cal State Fullerton) collected two hits and four
RBI in the 8-5 win over the Red Sox.
"This is the J.D Davis that we were expecting," Schiffner said. "He is really swinging the bat well right now."

Joe had an impressive game of his own, collecting two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored.

"He has really been a consistent force offensively this season. Very impressive," Schiffner said.

Dante Flores (USC) and Landon Lassiter (North Carolina) were the table setters, combining for three hits, two walks, and four runs scored.

The Anglers also got production from the bottom third of their lineup, as Prigatano, Brandon Sedell (Nova Southeastern), and Josh Eldridge (Old Dominion) combined for five hits, two walks, and two runs scored.

"No matter what point in the game it is, no matter who we are facing, we know that we are never out of it, and it is because of the offense we have," Moreno said. "They can have a big inning at any point, which gives us pitchers confidence in knowing that we don't have to be perfect."

With the win, Chatham now has a three-game winning streak, sit 10 games above the .500 mark at 18-8-1, and sit nine points ahead of second-place Harwich Mariners in the Eastern Division.

Despite all this success, Schiffner's message to the team has remained constant: Stay even-keel.

"Coach (Schiffner) has always told us that we can not get too high or too low," Moreno said. "We are confident, but we can't get cocky. We still have a lot of games left to play."
