Streak Snapped with 8-5 Loss to Cotuit

by Kyle Whitehead, 06-25-2007

Streak Snapped with 8-5 Loss to Cotuit After playing nearly perfectly in five straight wins, Chatham laid an egg at Veteran's Field Monday night, falling 8-5 to Cotuit in sloppy fashion.

The A's had three errors on the night. On the basepaths, Chatham ran itself out of several scoring opportunities. A's baserunners were caught stealing twice and one runner got thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.

Despite all that, Chatham still was able to put five runs on the board and had the go-ahead run at the plate against Cotuit reliever Robert Stock (USC) in the eighth. Travis Beausoleil (UCONN-Avery Pt.), a man prone to late inning dramatics this season, had no tricks left in the bag this time, however, as he flew out softly to center to halt the rally.

Cotuit got ahead early on back-to-back homeruns to right by Mike Bianucci (Auburn) and Ryne White (Purdue) in the third.

In the fifth, Reese Havens (South Carolina) led off with a single and Tony Delmonico (Tennessee) reached on an error by first baseman Allan Dykstra (Wake). Bianucci then struck again, this time with a two-RBI single to give Cotuit a 4-0 lead.

Bianucci would eventually come around to score thanks to control problems by Chatham starter Ryan Hinson (Clemson). Hinson hit Yan Gomes (Tennessee) with a pitch, then walked Curtis Dupart (Georgia Tech) and Josh Harrison (Cincinnati). The last base-on-balls plated a run and ended the night for Hinson.

Richie Tri (Central Connecticut St.) made it interesting in the eighth with a two-RBI double in the gap to bring Chatham within 7-5, which is as close as they would get.

Zach Putnam (Michigan) made his first appearance as an A when he pinch-hit in the eighth. He walked and scored on Tri's double.

Chatham will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow night at 7pm in Wareham. Gavin Brooks (UCLA) opposes Wareham's Andy Oliver (Oklahoma St).
