Chatham Comeback Falls Short against Hyannis, Winning-Streak Snapped
With two outs in the ninth inning, the Chatham Anglers trailed the Hyannis Harbor Hawks 4-3, with the tying run at first base, Dante Flores (USC) stepped up to the plate.

Flores was the hero the night before, as his RBI double sent Chatham home with the 4-3 victory against the Y-D Red Sox. The stage was set for Chatham to get it's third walk-off win of the season.

It was a matchup between Flores, the best hitter in the league coming into Tuesday, and the best closer in Hyannis right-hander Eric Eck (Wofford), who leads the league in saves with six coming into the game.

"We had the winning run at the plate. As a coach, you can not ask more from your team than that," Manager John Schiffner said. "Unfortunately, we came up a little short tonight."

Eck got Flores to chop a 2-2 offering to second base, ending the game, and snapping the Anglers five-game winning streak.

The patented Anglers late inning magic had run out, as they fell 4-3 to the Harbor Hawks (14-7). Despite the loss, Schiffner loved the way his team continued to battle.

"That is just them. They are grinders, and continue to play until the final out," Schiffner said. "Nobody likes to lose, but a lot of positives came out of tonight."

loss of the season on Tuesday vs. Hyannis

The Harbor Hawks struck early with two runs in the first inning off of Chatham starter Aaron Garza (Houston) on RBI hits from Austin Slater (Stanford) and Jake Hernandez (USC). Before the Anglers offense could take an at-bat, they were down 2-0.

For the second time this season, the Chatham bats were stymied by Hyannis starter Cy Sneed (Dallas Baptist). On this night, Sneed only allowed two hits and a run, while striking out five over five innings pitched.

"He had his good stuff going tonight," J.D Davis (Cal State Fullerton) said. "He was impressive."

The one run came in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Michael Russell (North Carolina), cutting the Hyannis lead to 2-1.

The Harbor Hawks struck back in the very next frame with two runs, both of them unearned, against Garza. It looked like the Anglers would get out of the inning with only one run given, but a seemingly simple throw to first on a grounder was botched by Flores, and the second run came across for Hyannis.

That run would turn out to be the difference in the game, as the Anglers would score two in the sixth inning on another hit from Russell to make it a 4-3 game, but could not come through with the tying run, and the Anglers would fall to the Harbor Hawks by that score.

Garza was dealt his third loss of the season, giving up six hits and four runs over five innings.

The bullpen was a bright spot for the Anglers on Tuesday, as Ryan Leach (Franklin Pierce) struck out five over three innings of scoreless relief, and Jacob Dorris (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) struck out the side in the ninth in his one inning of work.

Russell finished the game with two hits and all two RBI for the Anglers. Davis had two hits, scored two of the three runs, and also worked a walk.

The Anglers maintained their 3.5 game lead in the Eastern Division, as the Harwich Mariners also lost on Tuesday Night.

According to Davis, the team has already put the loss behind them.

"We made some mistakes that cost us, but we grinded it out, and had a chance to win," Davis said. "It just didn't fall our way tonight, but we will be fine. We were bound to lose one eventually, but we know we have a great team, and we will continue to work hard."

The Anglers will travel to Y-D to face the Red Sox on Wednesday, looking to go into their off day on Thursday with a victory.

"You always want to win before an off day, no question," Schiffner said.
