Anglers 'Running on All Cylinders' Before Makeup Game Against Y-D

by Chris Jones, 07-08-2013

Anglers 'Running on All Cylinders' Before Makeup Game Against Y-D The Chatham Anglers (14-6-1) supplied some more of their patented late inning magic Sunday night as they won win walk-off fashion over the Brewster Whitecaps (6-14).

Landon Lassiter(North Carolina), who was a late arrival for the Anglers, delivered the game-winning hit with an RBI single in the 10th inning.

"This team grinds," Manager John Schiffner. "They continue to battle and grind out wins. We really seem to be running on all cylinders."

The win moved Chatham to a league-best 14-6-1, and they will look to improve on that record, and increase their winning streak to five-straight games, as they take on the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (10-10-1) at Veterans Field on Monday night.

The game will be a makeup game, as the June 28 matchup was postponed due to weather.

The Anglers were supposed to have an off day today, but instead, this game will be one of 10-straight games that Chatham will play, with their next off-day coming on Thursday.

The team is 6-1 during this stretch so far, and Schiffner believes that his team is built to withstand a long haul such as this one.

Tommy Lawrence (Maine) will get the start for Chatham
as they take on Y-D in a makeup game.

"This team just continues to show its depth," Schiffner said. "Every game, we have guys on the bench and guys on the field that can do things for us."

The story on offense for the Anglers continues to be the walks, as Chatham leads the league with 120 total base-on balls, 37 ahead of the second-best Cotuit Kettleers.

The top three players in the league, when it comes to drawing walks, are all on the Chatham roster. Mitchell Gunsolus (Gonzaga) leads the league with 18, Rich Prigatano (Long Beach State) is second with 16, and Sheehan Planas-Arteaga (Barry) is third with 14.

On the mound for Chatham will be Tommy Lawrence (Maine), who will make his first start for Chatham in 2013.

Lawrence has made three relief appearances, and holds a 2.16 ERA with seven strikeouts in 8.1 innings pitched.

The only two runs that Lawrence has allowed came against the Red Sox on June 25, his first appearance of 2013. Lawrence was cruising through over two innings of relief, but with two outs in the ninth inning, gave up a two-run home run from D.J Stewart (Florida State) that would tie the game. The game was eventually called due to darkness, ending in a 5-5 draw.

This is not Lawrence's first year donning an Anglers uniform. In 2012, Lawrence appeared in 11 games for Chatham, posting a 4.19 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched.

Lawrence's counterpart on the mound will be Red Sox right-hander James Kaprielian (UCLA). In two appearances for Y-D, Kaprielian has only allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out four over three innings pitched.

As a freshman, Kaprielian appeared in 34 games for the Bruins, had a 1.55 ERA, only allowed seven earned runs, and held opposing batters to a .141 average in 40.2 innings pitched as he helped UCLA win the College World Series.

While the Anglers will face a tough task against Kaprielian, the teams confidence is at an all-time high, as they look to make it five-straight victories.

"Coming off of a big win, this team is feeling great right now," Blake Butera (Boston College) said. "We never give up, we play as a team, and we just seem to keep winning."
