Tom Terrific! Milone Shuts Down Cardinals
Something had to give Sunday night at Veteran's Field. The Orleans Cardinals came to town with three straight wins and the A's, riding a four-game win streak, had them one better. In the end the hotter team prevailed as Chatham rode the left arm of Tom Milone (USC) to a 4-1 victory.
Milone allowed one run on six hits while striking out 10 and walking none. He threw 102 pitches in 7 1/3 innings to earn the win. Through seven, Milone had faced just two batters beyond the minimum.
Chatham got on the board in the first by virtue of four straight walks by Cardinal starter Pat McAnaney (UVA). McAnaney barely missed on several pitches, eventually walking Kevin McAvoy (Maine) with the bases loaded to plate the game's first run.
In the second, Gregg Glime (Baylor) led off with a single. After Andrew Crisp (South Carolina) sacrificed Glime to second, Addison Johnson reached on an error by Cardinal shortstop Brandon Crawford (UCLA). Scott Lyons' (Arkansas) single then scored one run and Allan Dykstra's (Wake) double the other way scored two more, giving the A's a 4-1 lead they would never relinquish.
Orleans' best chance came in the eighth. After Hampton Tignor (Florida) drove home the first Cardinal run with a double off Milone, Orleans had the tying run at the plate with one out in the form of third baseman Mark Sobolewski (Miami). Greg Shannon (San Jose St.) came out of the bullpen to try for the five-out save and promptly struck out the first two batters he faced to end the threat.
Shannon went on to strike out the side in the ninth to end the game. The reliever recorded five outs, all via the strikeout.
The A's will go for their fifth straight Monday against the Cotuit Kettleers at 7pm in the last game of the homestand. Ryan Hinson (Clemson) makes his first start for Chatham. He will be opposed by J.B. Shuck (Ohio St.).
