Anglers Look to Continue Strong Run Against Struggling Wareham

by Chris Jones, 07-05-2013

Anglers Look to Continue Strong Run Against Struggling Wareham On 4th of July at Veterans Field, there were fireworks in the distance, and fireworks on the field, as the Anglers (11-6-1) exploded for 12 hits in the 7-2 victory over rival Orleans (9-8).

Dante Flores (USC) had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Erich Weiss (Texas) also added two hits and a run scored for the Anglers.

After only managing one hit in their previous game against Orleans on Wednesday, the Anglers vented their frustrations in the offensive outburst on Thursday.

"We were kind of upset from the night before," Weiss said. "We definitely let out our frustration out tonight."

Looking to begin a new winning streak, the Anglers will take on the Wareham Gatemen (3-15) Friday night at Veterans Field.

The defending Cape League champion Gatemen have had a tough go of it, as they sit in last place in the Western Division, nine games back of first place, have lost two-straight, and have only won two of their last ten games.

Despite the record, Coach John Schiffner knows that they can not be overlooked.

"They are not going to come here and lay down because of the season they have had and because we are Chatham," Schiffner said. "With a team that has struggled, you have to jump out on them early, because they will tend to get down on themselves quicker."

Lukas Schiraldi (Texas) will make his
fourth start of the season tonight.
Wareham is last in the league in hitting with a .216 team batting average, and is eighth in the league in pitching with a team 3.92 ERA.

Looking to add to the Gatemen's woes will be right-hander Lukas Schiraldi (Texas), who will be making his fourth start of the season for Chatham.

On the season, Schiraldi has an 0-1 record, but holds an impressive 2.45 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched. In his last start, Schiraldi only surrendered four hits and one run against Harwich, but would not factor into the final decision, as the Mariners walked-off with a win in the 10th inning.

In the past two games he has started, the Angler offense has only mustered one total run.

On the mound against Chatham will be Wareham starter Will Coursen-Carr (Indiana), who helped the Hoosiers reach their first ever College World Series this past collegiate season.

For the Hoosiers in 2013, Coursen-Carr had a 5-0 record with a 1.93 ERA, holding opposing batters to a .232 average in 65.1 innings pitched.

Due to participating in the College World Series, Coursen-Carr has only made one appearance for the Gatemen this season, in which he allowed one run and struck out three in three innings pitched against Orleans.

The Gatemen have nine players on the roster, including Coursen-Carr, who have arrived late because they were involved in the College World Series, which is one of the reasons Coach Schiffner knows his team can not overlook Wareham.

"They are going to be a good team, They are going to make a run," Schiffner said. "They have all of their guys now, so we can not expect a win. We have to go out and play well."

First pitch at 7 p.m. Tune into the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. for live coverage with broadcasters Brandon Liebhaber and Keith Zubrow at TRZ Teamline or call 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
