Anglers Look to Keep Rolling After Big Win vs. Harwich

by Chris Jones, 06-30-2013

Anglers Look to Keep Rolling After Big Win vs. Harwich It was an overall team-effort win for the Chatham Anglers on Saturday Night at Veterans Field, as they defeated the first-pace Harwich Mariners (9-5) by an 8-4 score.

The offense exploded for five runs in the first three innings. Starter Matt Gage (Siena) picked up his first win of the season after five strong innings. Jacob Dorris (Texas A&M- Corpus Christi) pitched two innings of perfect relief, and the Anglers walked away with a much needed win.

"It was a nice battle," Dante Flores (USC) said. "We are both going for first place, it was another long and hard-fought game, and it felt good to come out on top this time."

Flores also had an impressive performance, collecting two hits and 3 RBI in the win, including a mammoth two-run home run that landed at the Fire Station across from Veterans Field.

"All you could say was wow," Coach John Schiffner said. "He (Flores) definitely has some power."

After his performance, Flores raised his batting average to a team-leading .314, and now has 7 RBI, which also leads the team.

He is seventh in the league in total hitting, and third in the league with a .514 slugging percentage.

On the mound for the Anglers, looking to pick up his third win of the season, is left-hander Andrew Chin (Boston College).

Chin was forced to endure Tommy John Surgery during his senior high school season, ending his high school pitching career. Despite that, Chin was still drafted in the fifth round by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 169th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft.

take on Brewster (3-10)

He turned down the Blue Jays offer and honored his commitment to Boston College, where he redshirted in 2012, then posted a 3.88 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 67.1 innings pitched in 2013.

On the Cape League season, Chin has yet to take a loss, and holds an impressive 2.63 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched. In his last start against Orleans, Chin allowed his only four runs of the season and struck out six in 5.2 innings pitched.

"He is a great pitcher, and we seem to always get a quality outing from him," Schiffner said.

Chin's counterpart on the mound will be Brewster left-hander Jonathan Keller (Alalbama). In four appearances this season, Keller has yet to allow an earned run and has 11 strikeouts in nine innings pitched. Sunday will be his first start of the season.

For the Crimson Tide in 2013, Keller struggled with a 5.23 ERA, 28 walks, and 56 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched. Opposing hitters batted for a healthy .293 average against Keller.

Brewster has struggled early in the season, and currently sit in last place in the Eastern Division with a 3-10 record, second worst record in the league.

As a team, the Whitecaps are hitting for a .223 batting average, and have only scored 45 runs on the season.

They are also hold the second-worst earned run average in the league with a team 4.04 ERA, only ahead of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

Before their off day on Monday, the team is hoping that they can go into it with their ninth win of the season under their belts.

"It is a great feeling, going into tomorrow, that we are swinging the bats well, and although we still have things to work on, we have a lot to look forward to," Flores said.
