A's Coast to 6-1 Victory Over Mariners
After the first off day of the year on Thursday, there was some concern Chatham would come out flat on Friday and lose the momentum of two straight wins. That concern proved to be ill founded after the A's dominated Harwich 6-1 Friday night at Veteran's Field.

The A's took advantage of three Mariner errors on the night, resulting in six unearned runs for the home team.

Chatham has now won three in a row and four of its last five. Friday's game was the first of four straight home games, the longest homestand of the season.

The A's grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third off Mariner starter Danny Farquhar (Louisiana-Lafayette) on a two RBI single to right off the red-hot bat of Kevin McAvoy (Maine). The Maine Black Bear had the game winning hit Wednesday and is tied for the league lead in hitting.

Harwich had their chances early off Cliff Springston (Arkansas). The Mariners had two runners on in each of the first three innings but could not cash in. In the top of the second, Harwich had runners on first and third with nobody out. After Springston struck out Matt Miller (Georgia Southern), Terrence Dayleg (Western Kentucky) lined a ball foul down the right field line. Rightfielder McAvoy made a terrific sliding catch, jumped up and fired a strike home to keep the runner at third base.

Chatham tacked on three more runs in the fifth. After Trey Watten (Abilene Christian) singled, Allan Dykstra (Wake) hit a towering fly ball to centerfield. The ball got caught in the swirling winds at a brisk Veteran'sField, fooling Mariner centerfielder Jared Bolden (VCU), who let the ball hit off his glove and was charged with the error.

After new arrival Jermaine Curtis (UCLA) singled home Watten, Harwich catcher Kyle Day (Michigan St.) let a ball get by him to plate Dykstra. Scott Lyons (Arkansas), another A making his first start, then hit a sacrifice fly to center and Chatham had a 5-1 lead.

The A's pitching staff shut out Harwich the rest of the way. Springston and relievers Kevin Couture (USC) and Mitch Houck (Central Florida) combined to retire the last 14 Mariners to come to the plate.

Chatham and Falmouth take the field Saturday at 7pm for game two of the homestand. Chris Carpenter (Kent St.) takes the mound for the A's.
