Anglers Have to Settle for Tie Against Y-D

by Chris Jones, 06-25-2013

Anglers Have to Settle for Tie Against Y-D The first tie of the 2013 Cape League season belongs to the Chatham Anglers and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

"It is better than a loss," Coach John Schiffner said. "We get a point out of this game, and we will come back at it after our off day."

After Y-D starter Jeremy Null set down the first five Anglers he faced by strikeouts, the Anglers struck first with four runs in the third inning, then would add another run in the sixth inning.

Box Score

Game 5: Chatham 5, Y-D 5

It seemed like the Anglers were cruising with a 5-3 lead through the late innings, as reliever Tommy Lawrence (Maine) breezed through two innings of scoreless relief. In the bottom of the ninth, Schiffner sent Lawrence back out to finish the game.

Down to their last out, Y-D first-baseman D.J Stewart (Florida State) blasted a two-run homerun to center off of Lawrence.

Chatham had right-hander Jacob Dorris (Texas A&M Corpus Cristi) warming up in the ninth inning, but Schiffner stuck with Lawrence. Looking back on his decision, he would not have done anything differently.

"Tommy (Lawrence) was the guy we wanted on the mound," Schiffner said. "He will be the toughest on himself tonight, but we wanted him in that position at the end of the game. It happens."

Dante Flores (USC) picked up four hits and three doubles in
Chatham's 5-5 tie against Y-D

With the score tied, the Anglers headed to extra-innings for the first time this season. After a scoreless tenth inning, the game was called due to darkness, and after being one out away from a win, Chatham had to settle for a tie.

"It's definitely a bittersweet ending," Flores said. "We did our job, but they did their job too, and unfortunately we could not come away with the win."

Dante Flores (USC) had four hits and three doubles from the nine-spot in the order.

Including a pinch-hit RBI single on Monday night against Cotuit, Flores has collected five hits in his last seven at-bats. He gives most of the credit to the coaching staff.

Coming into Tuesday, Flores was only hitting for a .227 batting average in eight games played for the Anglers. After his four hit performance, he brought his average up to .346. Flores gives most of the credit to the coaching staff.

"The coaching staff and I have been working a lot in the batting cages, working the kinks out, and helping me get used to using a wood bat," Flores said. "I definitely have to give a lot of credit to them."

Starter Aaron Garza (Houston) allowed three runs and striking out one in 5.1 innings pitched. He was in line for the win before the Red Sox tied it up in the ninth.

Connor Joe (San Diego) collected two hits and two RBI in four at bats. Joe has been hitting the ball well in the past couple games, as he had a triple and a home run in Monday's game against Cotuit.

Heading into an off day, the team is looking to relax and get away from the grind of baseball for a day.

"I just told the guys to stay away from baseball-related activities for a day," Schiffner said. "They have worked hard, and they deserve the day off."

After the day off, the Anglers will travel to Harwich for the first time this season on Thursday to take on the Mariners.
