Anglers beat Falmouth, Move to 5-0 on the Season

by Chris Jones, 06-17-2013

Anglers beat Falmouth, Move to 5-0 on the Season Going into Monday night's game against Falmouth, there was a buzz around Veterans Field about the undefeated Anglers. For the team, though, the night was business as usual.

"We're just playing really good team baseball right now," outfielder Jimmy Pickens (Michigan State) said. "We just need to keep playing the way we are playing."

Pickens opened up the scoring for the Anglers in the second inning when he launched a two-out solo homerun to right field, the first of the season for the Anglers. Chatham would add a run in the third inning on a Mitchell Gunsolus (Gonzaga) RBI single, and one in the fourth inning to give the Anglers an early 3-0 lead.

Falmouth would rebound with two runs in the sixth inning, both coming from a home run by Commodore right-fielder Rhys Hoskins. Falmouth would never put together another scoring threat, the Anglers would add an insurance run in the eighth inning on a dropped-third strike that allowed shortstop Blake Butera (Boston College) to score, and Chatham secured their fifth win of the season, and maintained their unblemished record.

"It felt good to get out to a lead early," Pickens said. "We got out on top and had some great pitching performances."

The star of the night was right-hander Andrew Chin (Boston College), who picked up his second win in as many appearances. Chin, who threw three scoreless innings in relief in Chatham's season opener against Wareham, only allowed two hits and did not allow a run over five innings.

Chin was dominant on Monday night, and even he knew it.

"I felt great. I was able to make the pitches I needed to today," Chin said.

Coach John Schiffner has been impressed by Chin during his time as an Angler, not because he has a big arm, but because he knows how to pitch.

"In this league, youll see guys with big arms who can get you out by just throwing it by you," Schiffner said. "He (Chin) cant do that, but he is still an incredibly effective pitcher."

With two impressive outings so far, expectations for Chin have been raised in Schiffner's eyes.

"Of course, I don't want to put any pressure on him, but I do expect outings like this," Schiffner said. "He is a Cape Cod-caliber pitcher, and it is good to see him perform that way."

Right-handed pitcher Ryan Leach (Franklin Pierce) also came in and dominated the Falmouth lineup, not allowing a hit and striking out four in two innings of relief. Leach has yet to give up a run in three outings this season.

On Tuesday, the Anglers will travel to Hyannis to play the Harbor Hawks at McKeon field in a battle of the final two unbeaten Cape League teams. RHP Andrew McGee (Monmouth) will be on the mound for Chatham. In McGee's first start as an Angler, he pitched a masterful five innings, not allowing a run, and striking out nine.

His first start, and the days since then, have caught the eye of Chin and the pitching staff.

"His first outing, obviously, was great, and he has worked really hard since then," Chin said. "We are expecting big things from him again."

For Pickens, the start to the season has been great, but he and the team realize there is still al long season left to play.

"This has been great, being 5-0 is better than being 0-5," Pickens said. "We're just going to keep coming out and playing the next game."

First pitch is at 6 p.m. Tune into the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 5:40 p.m. for live coverage with broadcasters Brandon Liebhaber and Keith Zubrow at TRZ Teamline or call 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
