18 Anglers taken in the 2013 Draft
Your Chatham Anglers had fifteen players taken in the first year player draft, including three on day one: Kris Bryant (Chatham '11), Andrew Knapp ('12) and Chad Pinder ('12). Bryant was selected with the second overall pick in the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago Cubs Thursday. The junior hit an NCAA best 31 home runs for the University of San Diego this spring and is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. He became the highest drafted Chatham player since Matt Anderson ('96) went to the Detroit Tigers with the number one overall pick in 1997.
Bryant's selection marks the 18th time in 21 years that manager John Schiffner has had a player taken in the first round of the draft. Bryant is the highest drafted player to come out of the University of San Diego, which is coached by former Chatham field manager Rich Hill. He was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player for the year, and led the nation in in home runs (31), slugging percentage (.820), and runs (80). Bryant finished his junior season hitting .329 with 75 hits, 13 doubles, three triples, and 62 RBI.
Andrew Knapp ('12) was selected in the second round of the draft by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 53rd pick. The junior catcher out of California hit .350 with eight home runs and 41 RBI. He hit a team high 8 home runs for Chatham in 2012 and was named a CCBL All-Star.
With the 71st overall pick, the Oakland Athletics selected infielder Chad Pinder (Chatham 12). This past season, the junior out of Virginia Tech hit .321 with eight home runs and 50 RBI in a tough ACC conference. Despite battling a hernia, Pinder managed to hit .278 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 21 games. Pinder is a two-time selection of the All-ACC Academic team.
The A's continued their impressive list of players drafted in the 2013 MLB draft, with 12 players taken after the second round.
Louisville's Dace Kime ('11-12) was taken in
the third round by the Cleveland Indians
Louisville RHP Dace Kime ('11-12) was selected in the third round by the Cleveland Indians. Kime posted a 3.14 ERA in 66 innings pitched, allowing 23 earned runs and striking out 79 during his junior season. As an Angler in 2012, Kime had an ERA of 4.97 in 25.1 innings pitched, allowing 14 earned runs with 28 strikeouts. Kime is from Defiance, Ohio, which is under 200 miles from Cleveland.
In the fifth round, with the 156th overall pick, the Detroit Tigers selected Georgia Tech RHP Buck Farmer ('11). After being drafted in the 15th round by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2012 draft, Farmer decided to return to Georgia Tech and had a dominant senior season, posting a 2.78 ERA in 17 starts with 122 strikeouts and giving up only 35 earned runs.
Pepperdine RHP Scott Frazier ('12) was taken in the sixth round (168th overall), by the Chicago Cubs. In 2012, Frazier posted a 4.97 ERA in only 12.2 innings pitched, giving up seven earned runs and striking out 10. For Pepperdine in 2013, Frazier had a 4.06 ERA with 83 strikeouts, and was an ALL-WCC honorable mention recipient.
UCLA infielder Pat Valaika (12) was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the ninth round (259th overall). As an Angler, Valiaka posted a .258 batting average with 12 runs and 16 RBI.
In the 9th round (286th overall), the Washington Nationals selected Virginia Tech RHP Jake Joyce (12). As an Angler in 2012, Joyce posted a 3.37 ERA, striking out 35 and only allowing seven earned runs in 18.2 innings pitched. During his senior season at Virginia Tech, Joyce posted a 7-1 record in 30 appearances, allowing 29 earned runs and striking out 56.
The Rays took another Angler in the 14th round (428th overall), when they chose High Point RHP
Jaime Schultz ('12). Schultz posted a 2.82 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched for the Anglers, striking out 40 and only allowing seven earned runs.
University of San Diego RHP Michael Wagner (12) will join his college teammate Kris Bryant in Chicago, as the Cubs selected Wagner in the 15th round (438th overall). Wagner posted an impressive 1.57 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched for the Anglers. He was an All-Star for the CCBL's Eastern Division.
The Chicago White Sox selected Louisville OF Adam Engel ('12) in the 19th round (573rd overall). Engel batted .229 with 25 runs scored, 16 stolen bases and 14 RBI in 41 games for the Anglers in 2012.
In the 25th round (753rd overall), the Chicago White Sox selected Southern Hew Hampshire RHP
Alex Powers (11- 12). In 2012, the Brewster native posted a 1.68 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched for the Anglers.
The Pittsburgh Pirates took Maine infielder Michael Fransoso ('12) in the 27th round (809th overall). During his junior season, Fransoso batted .352 with 20 stolen bases and 49 RBI for Maine. He was named a Louisville Slugger All-American.
