Chatham Sends Wagner to Hill in Game One vs. Y-D
On Thursday afternoon, the Chatham Anglers (21-21-2) will begin the 2012 postseason against the Y-D Red Sox (25-21) at Red Wilson Field at 4 p.m. For the first time since 2007, the Anglers are back in a three-game series. In 2007, Chatham fell to Y-D in two games, losing 4-3 at Red Wilson Field and 4-0 at Veterans Field. This summer, the Anglers and the Red Sox split their season series 3-3, with Chatham winning 9-2 on June 16 and June 22, Y-D prevailing 12-2 on July 1 and 10-3 on July 8 and the Anglers winning 8-6 on July 25 and falling 6-4 on August 1.

"We just need to play our game," said Maine's Mike Fransoso. "They've got the better of us over the course of the year. But if we go out and just play like we've been playing in the last couple of weeks, we'll be alright."

Heading into the playoffs, Chatham finished the regular season 3-0, cementing the third playoff seed for a team that played most of the season with a below-.500 record. The Anglers crushed the Orleans Firebirds 7-2 in the final game of the regular season on Tuesday. Louisville's Dace Kime (1-0, 4.97 ERA) earned his first win of the season in relief (3IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 4K). California's Andrew Knapp and Maine's Alex Calbick provided a devastating 1-2 punch for Chatham, combining for four hits and five RBI.

On Thursday, the Anglers will send San Diego's Michael Wagner (2-2, 1.57 ERA) to the mound. The ace of Chatham's starting rotation and a 2012 Cape League All-Star, Wagner earned a no-decision in his final start of the regular season against Brewster on August 2 (7IP, 4H, 2ER, 0BB, 8K). In six starts and seven appearances this summer, Wagner has not allowed more than two earned runs in a game.

The Red Sox will hand UC Irvine's Andrew Thurman (3-3, 3.23 ERA) the ball to take on the Anglers. Thurman was given a no-decision in his most recent outing against Harwich on August 4 (3IP, 2H, 0ER, 0BB, 4K). On July 22 against Falmouth, Thurman tossed a complete game shutout against the Falmouth Commodores (9IP, 3H, 0ER, 0BB, 13K), one of the right-hander's two scoreless appearances this season.
