A's Top Orleans for First Win of Season

by Kyle Whitehead, 06-18-2007

A's Top Orleans for First Win of Season The formula for winning baseball games is not that complicated. Good pitching, good hitting and solid defense usually results in a victory. Chatham had all of that Sunday night and Chatham defeated rival Orleans 8-2 at Eldredge Park for its first win of 2007.

Chatham starter Tom Millone (USC) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work to notch the win. The Trojan fooled the Cardinals all night long with a repertoire of breaking pitches, off speed stuff and the occasional fastball to keep hitters honest.

New arrival Addison Johnson (Clemson) wasted no time contributing on offense. Leading off the game, Johnson singled off Cardinal starter Clayton Shunick, a Cape League All Star in 2006 with Orleans. He came around to score on a Kevin McAvoy (Maine) single to give the A's a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Johnson again got on base to lead off the inning with the score tied at one. This time the North Carolina native walked, stole second and came home on Allan Dykstra's (Wake) base hit. Sean O'Brien (Va. Tech), the next batter, continued his hot hitting with a two-run shot over the right field fence and the A's had a 4-1 lead, more than enough for Millone.

After Travis Beausoleil (UCONN-Avery Pt.) drove in Richie Tri (Central Connecticut St.) with a groundout in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-2, Chatham broke the game open in the top of the ninth. With runners on second and third, Tri smoked a ball down the left field line that cleared the bases. Rob Papenhause (Brown), most likely playing in his last game as an A, kept the rally going with an RBI single, stretching the A's lead to 8-2.

Greg Shannon (San Jose St.) picked up the save for Chatham.

The A's are back on the road Monday night in Falmouth to face the Commodores at 7pm.
