Matt Harvey Shines in MLB Debut

by George Barclay, 07-23-2012

Matt Harvey Shines in MLB Debut Chatham alumnus Matt Harvey ('08-09) will be officially promoted Tuesday by the New York Mets from Triple-A Buffalo and is expected to make his Major League debut Thursday in Arizona.

The promising 23-year-old right-handed pitcher from New London, CT was a four-year letter winner at Fitch Senior High School in Groton, CT before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With the Tar Heels, Harvey went 22-7 with a 3.53 ERA and recorded 263 strikeouts in three seasons. During his Diamond Heel tenure, Harvey spent the summers of 2008 and 2009 in Chatham where he went 1-3 with a 3.18 ERA (14 ER in 39.2IP) and struck out 45 batters in 16 appearances. Both of Harvey's Cape League seasons were somewhat abbreviated because of North Carolina's deep runs into the NCAA tournament.

Following his junior year, Harvey was selected as the seventh overall pick in the 2010 draft by the New York Mets. Making his pro debut in 2011 with the St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League, Harvey was promoted to double-A Binghamton mid-summer and finished the year at a combined 13-5. Selected as an MiLB.com Organization All-Star in December, Harvey began 2012 with triple-A Buffalo. Through June 23, Harvey is 7-5 for the Bison with a 3.68 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 110 innings.

Harvey is scheduled to make his big league debut on Thursday in a start against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 6-4, 225 pound right-hander will join former Chatham players Jason Bay (1999) and Bobby Parnell (2004) on the Mets' roster. Harvey will be the fifth Chatham alumnus to make his Major League debut in 2012, following Yan Gomes ('08) with Toronto, Shawn Tolleson ('09) with the Dodgers, Brad Boxberger ('08) with San Diego, and Adam Warren ('08) with the Yankees. Chatham's all-time alumni-in-MLB list will grow to 143 with Harvey's debut, more than any other Cape League team.

UPDATE: Harvey shined in his MLB debut, striking out 11 in 5.1 innings of work against the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday. He also went 2-for-2 at the plate. The 11 strikeouts set the franchise record for strikeouts in an MLB debut. He is expected to be in the Mets' rotation for the remainder of the season.
