Anglers Winning Streak Ends at Four, Fall to Wareham 10-6
You can't win them all. Chatham's four-game winning streak came to a halt on Monday night as the Anglers fell 10-6 to the Wareham Gatemen. In a see-saw type of game, Chatham (15-12) was able to land a series of blows, but could not deliver a knockout punch against a Gatemen (12-15) team that refused to go away.

"We were a little sloppy," said manager John Schiffner. "Wareham can really swing the bat though. That's a good team. I can't believe that they were 11-15 coming into this game. We just didn't play our best. Give credit to Wareham. They played a great game"

Box Score

Game 27: Wareham 10, Chatham 6

North Carolina southpaw Tate Parrish (1-3, 4.15 ERA) suffered the loss for Chatham, giving up two unearned runs on two hits in two and a third innings pitched while getting four strikeouts. Parrish entered the game in the top of the fifth inning in relief after Stetson right-hander Kurt Schluter (1-1, 4.22 ERA) ran into a bases loaded jam and walked in the tying run to make the game 4-4. Schluter earned a no-decision on Monday and surrendered five earned runs in four and a third innings to go with four strikeouts.

"Kurt did not have his best outing tonight," said Schiffner. "He knows he can throw better than that, so hopefully he can improve in his next time on the mound."

The Anglers also received a relief appearance from High Point's Jamie Schultz (1-0, 3.38 ERA), who conceded one run on one hit and struck out three in an inning and a third of work. Louisville's Nick Burdi (0-0, 5.40 ERA) joined the action for Chatham as well and gave up two home runs in one inning and struck out one.

"Burdi's a pretty good pitcher and Wareham hit him hard tonight," said Schiffner. "That's how well those guys were playing."

Louisiana State University's Nicholas Rumbelow (1-0, 2.95 ERA) earned the win for the Gatemen, allowing one earned run on one hit in one and two thirds innings pitched and recording five strikeouts. Amherst's Frederick Shepard (1-2, 5.40 ERA) received a no-decision after allowing three earned runs on three hits in three and two thirds innings. Following Shepard's departure, the Gatemen bullpen allowed just two runs on three hits in five and a third innings.

Yet, while the final score suggests an easy victory for the Gatemen, the early innings were in Chatham's favor. In fact, the Anglers scored four of their six runs in the first inning and had a 4-0 lead after a solo home run to right field by designated hitter Chad Morgan (VA Tech) and a three run double with the bases loaded by first baseman Alex Calbick (Maine). Calbick also tacked on Chatham's two other runs with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning and went 2 for 3 on the night with 5 RBI for an Angler team that had just six total hits and left 10 men on base.

"We had another early lead tonight," said Schiffner. "We've been getting good leads during this stretch, but tonight was not good. Wareham came right back at us and we didn't handle it as well as we should have. We let them get ahead of us and take control. We also didn't take advantage of our opportunities to score in the later innings."

The Gatemen went scoreless in only four innings and racked up 11 hits. Left fielder Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) and first baseman Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) carried Wareham, both producing a home run on two hits and combining for 5 RBI. Living up to their reputation as a power hitting team, the Gatemen hit three home runs, all of which were hit to center field.

With an off-day on Tuesday, the Anglers will have the chance to regroup before returning to Veterans Field on Wednesday to face the Orleans Firebirds (16-11). Taking more time than usual in the post-game pow-wow in the outfield, Schiffner reminded his team of how well they had played in the last few games and told his players to stay motivated.

"We're looking forward to playing Orleans," said Schiffner. "It's always fun to play them. We're a little dinged up right now, so hopefully the off-day will help us. We'll have to see what the lineup for Wednesday looks like."
