Chad Holbrook (A's '92) Named Gamecocks Head Coach
Former Chatham A's outfielder Chad Holbrook ('92) has been named head coach of the University of South Carolina baseball team following four seasons as the program's associate head coach and 15 years as an assistant at North Carolina. Holbrook replaces Ray Tanner who was named South Carolina's athletics director Friday after 16 seasons as the baseball team's head coach.

"Nobody's more thrilled than I am," said Chatham manager John Schiffner who was an A's assistant coach when Holbrook played on the Cape. "Chad's a great friend and a good friend of the Chatham Athletic Association." Holbrook helped the A's capture the 1992 Cape League championship.

The former North Carolina standout who was an All-ACC selection as a senior in 1993 with a .353 average went on to earn the reputation as college baseball's top recruiter. In a 2011 poll asking experts about college sports' best recruiters, Holbrook was the only college baseball coach listed and was 10th overall.

"He's the best," Schiffner said of Holbrooks' recruiting ability. "Obviously he's been recognized numerous times for the recruiting classes that he had both at North Carolina and South Carolina... There's no question he's the best."

Schiffner's longstanding relationship with Holbrook has allowed Chatham teams to feature some of the best talent at North Carolina and South Carolina for nearly 20 years. Tar Heels who've ridden the Holbrook train to Chatham and onto the Major Leagues include Brian Roberts ('98), Chris Iannetta ('02), Andrew Miller ('04-05) and Kyle Seager ('07-08).

Holbrook's Tar Heels were College World Series runners up in 2006 and 2007, and after moving to South Carolina for the 2009 season, the Gamecocks appeared in the CWS Finals three years in a row, winning in 2010 and 2011. USC's top hitter for the '10 title was .419-batting Evan Marzilli who Holbrook sent to Chatham the following summer, 2011.
