A's Fall to Harwich 9-4 in 5 Innings

by Kyle Whitehead, 06-15-2007

A's Fall to Harwich 9-4 in 5 Innings The 2007 season got off to a rocky start for the A's as they fell to Harwich 9-4 in the opener, but that was not what fans were talking about as they left Whitehouse Field on Friday night.

The fans exited the field in complete darkness after a power outage halted play in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mariner centerfielder Matt Miller (Georgia Southern) was at the plate when the field went dark. As the coaches and umpires met at home plate, police cars arrived bringing news that a car crashed into a pole and knocked out power for a significant portion of Harwich.

After waiting for almost an hour, the umpires decided to call the game, citing unsafe playing conditions as the official explanation. The five innings of play made the game official and game one will go in the books as a loss for Chatham.

Harwich got to Chatham starter Matt Giannini (Rutgers) early, plating four in the bottom of the first thanks in part to two Giannini walks and one hit batter. The New Jersey native's lack of control was a trend, as Giannini surrendered four more runs in the third before being pulled in favor of Jeff Lorick (Virginia) after just 2 2/3 innings.

A's batters struggled to make contact against Mariner starter Danny Farquar (Louisiana-Lafayette), who struck out 11 in five innings of work.

The A's did get on the board in the second when Kevin McAvoy (Maine) drove in Robert Pietroforte (Johns Hopkins) for Chatham's first run of 2007. Travis Beausoleil (UCONN-Avery Pt.) put another run on the board with a sacrifice fly. Chatham added two more runs in the third to tie the game.

Harwich put the game out of reach with a four spot in the bottom of the inning before the power outage stopped play in the fifth.

Chatham is back in action Saturday night for the home opener against the 2006 Cape League Champion Y-D Red Sox. First pitch at Veteran's Field is set for 7pm.
