Chatham Poised for First Battle with Harwich

by George Barclay, 07-06-2012

Chatham Poised for First Battle with Harwich After consecutive road games, the Chatham Anglers (10-8) return to Veterans Field on Friday night to take on the Harwich Mariners (13-5). The Anglers have won two games in a row and are fresh off a 9-1 victory at Brewster on Thursday evening. The Mariners are 7-3 in their last ten games and won 4-0 on Thursday evening against the Orleans Firebirds at Eldredge Park.

Franklin Pierce's Ryan Thompson (0-0, 0.82 ERA) will make the start for Chatham. Thompson has received no-decisions in both of his starts this season and has allowed only one earned run. The Alberta native surrendered one run on six hits in his last start against the Falmouth Commodores on June 29 and recorded five strikeouts in six innings of work. The junior will face a Mariner lineup that leads the Cape League in home runs with 32 and is batting .253 as a team. Harwich is led at the dish by outfielder Phil Ervin (Samford), who leads the league in home runs with eight and is hitting .377.

Harwich's David Whitehead (3-0, 1.72 ERA) will man the hill for the Mariners. The Elon right-hander has earned victories in all three of his starts this season, his most recent coming on June 29 against Cotuit, where he gave up two runs on five hits in four innings of work. A pitcher who specializes in throwing to contact, Whitehead has recorded only six strikeouts this season. The Ohio native has the most wins for a Harwich staff that leads the Cape League in strikeouts with 186 and has a 4.05 team ERA, the fourth best mark in the league.

The Anglers have racked up 14 runs on 18 hits in their last two games. With four walks on Thursday against Brewster, Chatham leads the Cape League in with 74. Outfielder Aaron Brown (Pepperdine) and catcher Andrew Knapp (California) lead Chatham offensively, batting .282 and .274 respectively. Knapp went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI against Brewster on Thursday and leads the team with three. Center fielder Adam Engel (Louisville) still leads the league in stolen bases with 11 and third baseman and designated hitter Chad Pinder (Virginia Tech) tops the Cape League in RBI with 20, despite recording none against the Whitecaps on Thursday. Infielder Mike Fransoso (Maine) is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average to .261 on the season.

Friday's broadcast will be a special one, marking the tenth anniversary of the Cape Cod Baseball Network, a broadcasting outlet started by Dan D'Uva and Guy Benson, two former Chatham broadcasters. Both D'Uva and Benson will be back on the air, providing live play-by-play commentary and speaking with a host of special guests. For live coverage of Friday's game, tune into the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. at TRZ Teamline.
