Anglers to Face Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in Second Home Game
Another day, another game. On Saturday, June 16, the Chatham Anglers (1-1) will take on the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (1-1) at 7 p.m. After a 3-0 loss to the Cotuit Kettleers on Friday night, the Anglers look to rise above the .500 mark in their second home game of the season and first contest against an Eastern Division foe.

Right-hander John Soldinger (Manhattan) is scheduled to make the start for the Anglers. In 2012, Soldinger went 6-5 for the Jaspers, posted a 3.43 ERA, and struck out 53 hitters.

"John had a good year in college. He's a bulldog and an inning-chewer," said pitching coach Scott Winterburn, who is now in his second year with the team. "John's going to battle. He's got plate-side command of his fastball and good secondary pitches."

Southpaw Scott Squier (Hawaii) is slated to take the rubber for the Red Sox. Squier went 3-4 this season, had a 3.50 ERA and recorded 55 strikeouts. Yarmouth-Dennis will look to Squier to have a strong outing for a staff that has a 2.09 team ERA in the first two games.

Tallying just four hits on Friday night, the Anglers will try to get base-runners on early and often against the Red Sox. In particular, Chatham hopes to notch some more extra-base hits. So far this season, the Anglers have only three extra-base hits, all of which are doubles. If Chatham can provide Soldinger with some run support early, the Anglers can put pressure on Yarmouth-Dennis on the base paths. Although manager John Schiffner's teams are not known for stealing, the Anglers are well-coached with regard to taking sizable leads and getting good jumps on base hits.

Defensively, the Anglers will look for more of the same from the team's pitchers. Chatham's arms have posted a 3.50 team ERA so far this season and recorded 16 strikeouts. The most glaring blemish for Chatham in the early part of the season has been in the walk column. In the two games so far, the Anglers have walked eight hitters, providing teams with extra base runners. If Chatham can have greater control of the count, the Anglers will have an easier journey getting through a formidable Red-Sox lineup possessing a .328 team batting average.

Saturday's game will ultimately come down to run prevention and run production for the Anglers. In Chatham's two games this season, the team has fallen behind in the early innings. Some early offense for the Anglers would release the pressure of playing against a deficit. At the same time, the Anglers' pitchers need to keep the ball down against Yarmouth-Dennis, a team that already has two home runs on the year.

With a wide variety of items to prepare for heading into Saturday's game, the Anglers' approach remains centered on player development, a philosophy characteristic of teams led by John Schiffner.

"Our primary concern right now is the game-to-game at-bats our hitters are having and the day-to-day outings our pitchers are having. The process is extremely important because it will dictate the rest of the summer," said Winterburn.
