Richie Shaffer and Pat Light Drafted on Day 1

by Graham Harboe, 06-05-2012

Richie Shaffer and Pat Light Drafted on Day 1 The first day of the 2012 First Year Player Draft concluded with 20 of the draftees having played in the Cape Cod Baseball League. The 25th overall pick 3B Richie Shaffer and 37th overall pick LHP Pat Light were members of the 2011 Chatham Anglers.

Shaffer was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays and went into the draft as the Anglers most touted big league prospect because of his bat. While totaling six home runs, 11 doubles, and 22 RBIs during his time in Chatham, the Charlotte, NC product was crowned the Cape's Home Run Derby Champion, awarded a spot on the Cape League All-Star roster, as well as hit for the cycle in Chathams 10-4 win against Cotuit on June 17.

In this past year, as a junior and co-captain (alongside 2010 Angler, Phil Pohl) at Clemson, Shaffer batted .336, with 49 runs, 78 hits, 21 doubles, 10 home runs, and 46 RBIs leading the Tigers to the Regional Finals in this year's NCAA Tournament. Having spent time at both first and third base, he finished his career with an outstanding fielding percentage of .986 and has the ability to play both corners and possibly right field at the next level.

LHP Pat Light was taken shortly after Shaffer by the Boston Red Sox, with their compensation round pick for the loss of Jonathan Papelbon to free agency. Coming out of Monmouth University in New Jersey, Light made four starts for Chatham last summer posting a 3.77 ERA with 24 strikeouts.

With a 6-foot-6 frame and ERA of 2.40, Light was the ace of the Hawks staff this past spring. He allowed just 84 hits and 16 walks in 101 and 1/3 innings of work. His 102 strikeouts were a product of his fastball which ranges from the mid to high 90s.

With the selection of Shaffer in the first round, Chatham has produced a first-round pick in 17 of the last 20 years under manager John Schiffner.

Day 2 of the 2012 First Year Player Draft continues tomorrow at 12 ET. Matt Koch (RHP Louisville) and Dane Phillips (C Oklahoma State) are projected to be the next to go for the Anglers somewhere within the top 100 picks.
