Chatham Alumni in Major League Playoffs

by Anglers Media Team, 10-01-2011

Chatham Alumni in Major League Playoffs Chatham alumni on MLB postseason rosters include Evan Longoria ('05), Tampa Bay Rays; Vance Worley ('06), Philadelphia Phillies; Bryan Shaw ('07) and Brad Ziegler ('01), Arizona Diamondbacks.

Longoria and the Rays topped the Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the ALDS Friday night, 9-0, 24 hours after the third baseman's historic home run which launched Tampa Bay into the postseason. In the regular season, the three-time All-star and '08 AL Rookie of the Year drove in 99 runs along with 31 homers despite nagging injuries that forced him to miss 29 games.

Worley, a candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year, has been Philadelphia's fifth starter during the regular season. The righthander was 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA in the regular season, but is more likely to appear out of the bullpen during the NLDS, as the Phillies list Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee as starting pitchers for Games 1 and 2, respectively, in the best-of-five series vs. St. Louis which starts Saturday at 5 p.m.

Ziegler, a submarining righty, and Shaw, a hard throwing rookie, are both bullpen arms for Arizona. Ziegler, in his fourth major league season, allowed only four earned runs in 23 relief appearances for the Diamondbacks after being traded from Oakland at the trade deadline July 31. Shaw was recalled from triple-A Reno twice in 2011, making his major league debut June 11. He was sent back to the minors after five appearances, but rejoined the big club days before Ziegler was acquired in late July. Shaw finished the regular season with a 2.54 ERA in 33 bullpen outings, getting stronger down the stretch with only one run allowed in his last 10 appearances. Arizona travels to Milwaukee to begin the NLDS Saturday at 2 p.m.
