Tim Federowicz Rips First Major League Hit

by Anglers Media Team, 09-17-2011

Tim Federowicz Rips First Major League Hit Tim Federowicz, former Chatham and UNC-Chapel Hill catcher and DH, struck his first major league base hit Thursday as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. (VIDEO) The fifth-inning, line-drive single up the middle came off another former Chatham alum, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Ross Ohlendorf (Chatham '03) out of Princeton University who hit his first major league homer in the game.

Appearing in his second big league contest, his first start, Federowicz donned the snow white jersey stitched with Dodger blue and number 31 on the back, the same number worn by Mike Piazza at Chavez Ravine for six seasons. "Fed-Ex" was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second, threw out Andrew McCutchen on a steal attempt in the top of the fifth (VIDEO), and in the next half inning collected the single. He later picked up a walk, finishing the game 1-for-2.

The Apex, NC native hit .297 for the 2007 Chatham A's, 27 hits in 28 games, with 14 RBIs, 13 walks, 7 doubles and a home run. He was catcher for the Tar Heels during both of their trips to the College World Series Finals in 2006 and 2007.

Federowicz was acquired by the Dodgers from the Boston Red Sox, the team that drafted him in the seventh round in 2008, in late July. Listen to Dodgers GM Ned Colletti talk about the move.
