Whitecaps Upend Anglers

by Anglers Media Team, 07-28-2011

Whitecaps Upend Anglers After getting out to an early 1-0 lead, the Anglers failed to score another run and were dispatched by the Brewster Whitecaps (19-17-4) on Thursday.

The Whitecaps had lost seven of eight since they last saw Chatham, but regained their footing in the Eastern Division with the 6-1 win.

Chatham remains the only visiting team to notch a home run at Stony Brook Field this season. With two outs and two strikes in the top half of the first inning, Richie Shaffer (Clemson) belted a solo bomb to left which gave the Anglers an early advantage.

Starter Dace Kime (Louisville) hit J.J. Altobelli (Oregon) with a pitch in the first and Altobelli would come around to score the tying run, but the game remained split at 1-1 until the fifth.

After three singles brought home the go-ahead run, a three-run homer by Taylor Ard (Washington State) stretched out Brewster's lead and chased Kime from the game after five complete innings of work.

Facing Brandon Love (Mercer), the Anglers managed only four hits of their own. Shaffer tabbed a home run and a double on the evening, a fitting primer for the home run derby at Fenway Park on Friday.

Joe Sever (Pepperdine) was the only other Angler to reach base multiple times. Chatham left seven men on base and got shut out over the last eight innings by a combination of four different Brewster pitchers.

Chad Gallagher (Marist) tossed the sixth inning for Chatham and surrendered a run, with Pat Light (Monmouth) finishing off the contest on the mound. Light allowed one runner to reach base in his two innings pitched.

After the game, Shaffer elaborated on the postmortem.

"[Manager] John Schiffner said he knows we're playing hard and he sees us working hard out there," Shaffer said.

Chatham falls to 14-25-1 with the 6-1 loss. The team gets a day off on Thursday to prepare for Friday's All Star Game at Fenway Park.
