Anglers Well Represented in July 29th All Star Game

by Anglers Media Team, 07-25-2011

Anglers Well Represented in July 29th All Star Game As the season hits the home stretch, the primary objective will be making the playoffs. But on July 29th, the Anglers top producers will get a chance to shine at Fenway Park and represent the Eastern Division in the CCBL All Star Game.

Dane Phillips (OK State) and Matt Koch (Louisville) made the game roster for the East. Tucker Healy (Ithaca) is listed as an alternate and Richie Shaffer (Clemson) will represent the East in the home run derby.

For most of the 2011 season, the Anglers carried four catchers. So the fact that the East's starting catcher is an Angler should not come as a surprise.

It may be a surprise, however, that Dane Phillips will serve as the starting backstop for the All Star Game.

Phillips saw limited time at catcher with Oklahoma State during the collegiate season and has only caught three games (all wins) for the Anglers in July. Manager John Schiffner touched on the value Phillips has added this season.

"He's been our most consistent hitter for one," Schiffner said. "It's a real feel good story for Dane because he didn't catch as much as he wanted to at Oklahoma State."

Phillips' .314 average ranks as the third highest in the division. The lefty bat also adds 24 RBI, the second highest total in the CCBL behind Cotuit's Victor Roache (Georgia Southern).

Matt Koch transitioned to the role of closer in mid July and has now recorded four saves in his last four appearances. Koch's 1.31 ERA paces the Anglers' pitching staff. Koch has made 15 appearances and has yet to give up an earned run in the month of July.

Schiffner is quick to point out his approval of Koch's trajectory this season.

"He's been absolutely fantastic," Schiffner said. "He started out as a long reliever and now he's our most consistent pitcher and our closer."

Tucker Healy could be called on as an alternate to pitch for the East. Healy is one of three available alternates should a pitcher drop off the roster. Healy can boast 23 punch outs to just four free passes issued across his 14 innings of work.

The junior RHP earned the recognition of the Eastern Division coaches after posting a 2.51 ERA in 11 appearances out of the pen.

Richie Shaffer's selection to the home run derby team is a tremendous accomplishment, but Schiffner is quick to point out that Shaffer is far from a one-dimensional hitter.

"He can hit the ball a long way, but Richie is a good hitter, not just a power hitter," Schiffner said.

Shaffer's CCBL résumé includes four home runs, the high water mark for the Anglers. Shaffer's 10 doubles and two triples both lead all Chatham bats as well.

The sophomore out of Clemson had 13 homers in the collegiate season while maintaining a .315 batting average.

First pitch from Fenway Park is scheduled for July 29th at 7:07 p.m. ET. Comcast SportsNet New England will air the game and other Comcast affiliates will air the feed as well.
