Schiff Gets 400th Win

by Anglers Media Team, 06-21-2011

Schiff Gets 400th Win Chatham halted a three-game losing streak with a 10-9 win over the Y-D Red Sox Tuesday at Red Wilson Field, and in the process John Schiffner became the first field manager to record 400 Cape Cod Baseball League victories.

Schiffner owns the most managerial victories in Cape Cod Baseball League history, 66 more than Don Reed (334) and 69 more than former Chatham skipper Ed Lyons (331). Schiffner, who began his Chatham tenure as an assistant coach on Lyons' 1978 A's, became the team's manager midway through the 1993 season, claimed CCBL titles in '96 and '98, won his 200th game in '01, his 300th in '06, set the CCBL record with 335 wins in '07, and now becomes first manager to achieve the 400-win milestone.

Chatham would need every one of its 10 runs to unseat the home crew. In the three hour affair, the two teams combined for 30 hits but the Anglers came away with the edge, 10-9.

The third and fourth innings produced eight of Chatham's 10 runs. After Red Sox starter Kyle Hansen (St. Johns) retired the first two hitters in the third, the Anglers scraped together a rally. Clemson's Richie Shaffer reached on an error in between a pair of walks issued by the starter. Kris Bryant (San Diego) was then hit by a two-strike pitch and Alex Calbick (Maine) converted with the bases loaded. The designated hitter's single was the Anglers' only hit of the inning, but it drove in two and netted a three-spot in the frame.

Chatham added on in the fourth with a pair of two-run blasts. Joe Sever (Pepperdine) and Dane Phillips (Oklahoma State) each homered as part of a five-run fourth. Chatham sent nine to the plate and chased Hansen with a 9-3 lead through three and a half innings.

Steven Piscotty (Stanford) was three-for-five with a home run in his first at-bat of the CCBL season for Y-D. Sophomore Razorback Matt Reynolds' three-hit evening helped the Red Sox mount a comeback from six runs down.

Buck Farmer's first outing with Chatham lasted four innings. The sophomore from Georgia Tech allowed five earned runs on nine hits as part of a no-decision. Matt Koch (Louisville) earned the win for Chatham, his first decision in four outings this season. Koch has not allowed a run in three consecutive appearances. Zack Jones (San Jose State) earned his third save on the season which ties him for the league lead.

The twin blasts were Chatham's first home runs since Friday, June 17th at Cotuit. Eight of the starting nine hitters in the Anglers order recorded a hit, with Alex Calbick (Maine) going three-for-five as the designated hitter. Four Anglers had multiple hits in the contest.

The Red Sox put up two in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh. The pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth tied it but a Chatham run in the eighth proved to be the difference.

Win number 300 fell on July 10th, 2006. Almost five years later, Schiff collected his 400th. Both games were decided by one run, but the accomplishment in '06 came after a 1-0 pitcher's duel. The complexion of Tuesday's game was entirely different but just as tense.

The 10-9 win ends a three-game skid and improves Chatham to 4-6-1. The Anglers meet Brewster on Wednesday at Veterans Field. First pitch will be at 7 p.m. ET. The Anglers are still searching for their first win at home in the 2011 campaign.
