Comeback Effort Falls Short
Chatham's first trip to Bourne ended on a sour note Saturday. Key defensive mistakes by Chatham helped the Braves (2-4) secure just their second win of the season, while the performance dropped the Anglers (3-4-1) below .500 yet again. 6-5 was Saturday's the final at Doran Park.

The home half of the fourth was the pivotal inning. Chatham starter Pat Light (Monmouth) retired the first two batters he faced in the frame but then surrendered a single to Josh Elander (TCU). A routine ground ball on the infield was thrown away, then with a pair on base, Georgia Bulldog Kyle Farmer knocked a routine ground ball and Chatham again threw it away.

The three-error inning netted three runs. Braves shortstop Garrett Cannizaro (Tulane) singled to drive in one more before Light finally worked out of the three-run inning. None of the three were earned.

Light worked through five innings in his second start. The sophomore allowed five hits, struck out five, and walked two. Light has now thrown nine full inning for the Anglers with a 4.00 ERA but owns an 0-2 record.

Bourne crossed the plate once in the second, fifth, and sixth to net half a dozen runs.

The biggest upside for Chatham was the performance of Dominic Leone. The righty out of Clemson debuted with three innings of one-run baseball out of the Anglers' bullpen. Leone struck out six and surrendered three hits across a limited stretch out of the pen.

Miami's Stephen Perez added his second multi-hit contest in as many games. Kris Bryant (San Diego) added a pair of singles while Alex Calbick (Maine) re-entered the lineup Saturday with three singles. Right fielder Jake Berry (Marist) reached base in four plate appearances, with a trio of singles and two runs batted in.

Bourne used five pitchers on Saturday but starter Ryne Stanek carried the majority of the load. Stanek allowed two runs over five complete innings of work. The Arkansas Razorback struck out five, walked two, and earned the W in his debut.

R.J. Alvarez (Florida Atlantic) notched his first save for Bourne. Chatham threatened briefly in the eighth as the first two batters reached base, but Alvarez entered the situation with one out and shut down the rally.

Chatham had a dozen hits but left as many runners on base. Richie Shaffer (Clemson) cooled off Saturday in the three-hole after he cycled at Cotuit on Friday.

Manager John Schiffner made other changes in the alignment. UCLA standout Beau Amaral got the nod in center, while Calbick was back in the order after an off day Friday. Kris Bryant was out of the defensive rotation but still batted as the designated hitter. Oklahoma State's Dane Phillips started behind the dish before giving way to West Point's J.T. Watkins. Watkins gave way to Sean Reilly (FIU) after the newcomer caught just one inning and fanned in his only at-bat.

Through eight games, the Anglers are 3-4-1. Chatham will play a pair of games with Hyannis tomorrow. The action from Veterans Field begins at 4 p.m. ET. The nightcap starts shortly after conclusion of game one. The Anglers dropped a 2-1 decision on the road in their only meeting with the Harbor Hawks this season.
