Shaffer Cycles, Anglers Triumph
For the first time, Joe Sever (Pepperdine) wasn't the starter at second base. Instead, Sever was in the outfield. Kris Bryant (San Diego), a mainstay at first base, was rotated to third. The hot-hitting Alex Calbick (Maine) was out of the lineup.

Who was manager John Schiffner accommodating' It became very clear on a soggy Friday evening in Cotuit. Clemson sophomore Richie Shaffer (pictured) had arrived, and he announced his presence in a big way against the defending CCBL champs.

In his first game with Chatham, Shaffer hit for the cycle and reached in all five plate appearances en route to a 10-4 win over the Kettleers.

The Anglers (3-3-1) picked up a 10-4 win on Shaffer's 4-5 performance. It was the first win for Chatham since sweeping a doubleheader in Falmouth last Monday.

And where Shaffer went, the Anglers went. The Clemson product led off the second inning with a single in his first CCBL plate appearance. Catcher Sean Reilly (FIU) followed up with a base knock, and Demon Deacon standout Patrick Blair's three-bagger drove them both in. Sever singled, and Miami's Stephen Perez doubled later in the inning. When Kettleer's hurler Nick Price (Tennessee Tech) finally recorded a third out, Chatham had scored five on six hits while sending nine batters to the plate.

One swing of the bat generated two runs in the fourth for Chatham. Dane Phillips (Oklahoma State) put a belt-high fastball from Price into the trees at Lowell Park, adding another crooked number to the scoreboard.

And speaking of the long ball, it remains a theme; Chatham recorded two bombs on the evening. In fact, the Anglers account for six of the fourteen jacks in the CCBL. Division-leading Yarmouth-Dennis (4-2-1) is the only other team with multiple homers.

After going five innings and surrendering just one run against the Kettleers on opening night, Wake Forest's Tim Cooney got his second start under almost identical circumstances. Cooney improved on a stellar opening night performance, pitching seven complete innings, surrendering three hits and two earned runs while fanning four and walking none.

Cooney's outing was the longest for any Anglers' arm this summer. Despite the increased workload, Cooney never labored and seldom fell behind in a count. The lefty picked off a pair of runners, while Reilly nabbed a runner on a throw behind to second.

Cooney's toughest inning was the fourth. He gave up three consecutive hits to open the frame, but punched his first and second strikeouts of the night, then induced a pop-up to work out of the frame. Two runs came across for Cotuit in the home end of the fourth, but the Kettleers would not score again until the eighth.

Tucker Healy (Ithaca) relieved Cooney to begin the eighth. Healy coughed up a run on two hits with a strikeout and finished the inning before giving way to Louisville's Dace Kime for the ninth. Kime walked the leadoff hitter but faced the minimum in Chatham's third win of the young season.

Cooney earned his first win of the CCBL season. The Anglers produced 13 hits to help the Wake Forest ace's cause. Shaffer's effort helped. The cycle included 3 RBI and two runs scored. Jake Berry (Marist) added three base knocks and Perez also had a multi-hit game in his first start of the season. In five at-bats this season, Perez has three hits and two walks, with two of the swings going for extra bases.

Chatham's win gave the two teams identical records. Both the Anglers and Kettleers are 3-3-1.

The Anglers travel to Bourne on Saturday. First pitch from Doran Park will be at 6 p.m. ET
