Anglers Take Two in Falmouth
On Monday morning, the Anglers were still searching for their first win of the season. By late Monday evening, the Anglers had a winning record.

It took just three runs spread out across two games for Chatham (2-1-1) to dispatch the Falmouth Commodores (0-4). In both games, no team scored until the final inning of play, and each game was decided by a single run.

CCBL doubleheaders play just seven innings apiece, which made Commodores' ace Andrew Heaney's 10-strikeout performance in game one that much more impressive. But as electric as the Oklahoma State lefty was, he faded just enough in the seventh.

Heaney, who teased hitters with first-pitch breaking balls that fell for strikes all night, walked Chatham's Kris Bryant (San Diego) to start the seventh and final frame. A Sean Reilly (Florida International) sac bunt moved Bryant over, setting the table for Alex Calbick (Maine). The freshman made up for consecutive strikeouts in his two previous at-bats, lacing a deep single to bring in Bryant and give Chatham a 1-0 lead.

Chad Gallagher (Marist) looked just as unbeatable in his first go around for the Anglers. Gallagher tossed six scoreless innings and struck out five en route to his first win of the CCBL season. San Jose State's Zack Jones closed the contest, coming in with a one-run lead to get the final three outs of game one.

Jones also showcased his durability on Monday. After one full inning of work in game one, he stepped up with runners on base and just one out during the bottom of the seventh inning in game two, and capped that game off as well for the Anglers.

Both offenses struggled in the nightcap. The Commodores failed to capitalize on two early doubles in the second and then again in the fourth. On the other side of the ball, five of the first six Chatham bats struck out to open the last seven inning affair.

Dace Kime (Louisville) started on the slab for Chatham in game two. Kime faced one more than the minimum through three and managed to stave off a 4th inning double to kick off the frame for Falmouth. Kime was efficient with pitches but got lifted before the seventh having given up only a pair of hits on the evening. Tucker Healy (Ithaca) started the seventh but ran into immediate danger and gave way to Jones.

It was the Zack Jones show from that point on in the seventh. After walking in a run, Jones struck out a batter and induced a groundout to second base leaving the tying run for the Commodores on third and solidifying a winning record for Chatham through four games.

The Commodores stuck to the theme established in game one and allowed their starter to work deep into the game. Andrew Aizenstadt (Babson) matched Kime out-for-out, inning-for-inning until the final six outs. It was when both teams called to the bullpen that Chatham capitalized.

Righthander Jerry Battipaglia (Villanova) came on for the seventh, only to give up the big hit to just the second batter he faced.

It was Joe Sever's night to be the hero with the bat. The Pepperdine product crushed a line drive double to the wall which scored the go-ahead run, then later came home to score and add a cushion to the lead.

As it turned out, that cushion was necessary. Jones walked in a run but earned the save in a 2-1 affair. For the California kid, it was the second save of his night as well as the second of his CCBL season. Dace Kime attached his first win to his resume after he tossed six scoreless on a breezy , chilly evening in Falmouth.

The Anglers will face Hyannis on Tuesday at 7pm.
