Anglers Shine in Regional Play
17 players on the 2011 Chatham Anglers roster participated in the NCAA Regionals with six players on three teams advancing to the Super Regionals.

Chris Munnelly (pictured), Cody Penny and Matt Roberts all advance with North Carolina, winners of the Chapel Hill Regional. Righty Chris Munnelly threw 4.2 innings, surrendered eight hits and walked only one, earning a no-decision for UNC as the Tar Heels topped James Madison to finish the regional. UNC hosts Stanford University this weekend in a best-of-three Super Regional series.

Elsewhere on the Eastern Seaboard, Florida advanced out of the Gainesville Regional. 2011 Angler Hudson Randall started against Miami. The sophomore threw six innings, gave up six hits and three runs but did not earn a decision in the Gators' win. Randall's teammate Steven Rodriguez capped Florida's 3-0 regional victory by throwing two innings of scoreless baseball on the bump. Florida will host Mississippi State in a Super Regional beginning Friday.

Several Anglers also contributed to upset bids, most notably, in the Houston Region, Cal sophomore second baseman Tony Renda reached base three times in the Golden Bears' first win over Alcorn State. Renda notched eight hits across five games, including a three-for-five effort with three runs scored to help the Bears nip Baylor. That game decided the regional winner in Houston. Cal will host Dallas Baptist this weekend in the Santa Clara Super Regional.

In Columbia, South Carolina, Angler-to-be Evan Marzilli went 3-11 at the plate with three runs scored to propel the Gamecocks to a home regional victory. Marzilli is hitting .302 this season and looks to repeat a 2010 College World Series in which he hit .370 and was named to the CWS All-Tournament Team. Marzilli's first trip to Chatham will be delayed as the Gamecocks handle red-hot UConn this weekend in the Columbia Super Regional.

Some Anglers will be making the trip to Chatham sooner than they had hoped. No. 12 Clemson was upset in its home regional by UConn, hastening the arrival of Dominic Leone and Richie Shaffer to the Cape. Shaffer excelled, roping four hits in 12 at-bats with a home run and adding a pair of walks. The Tigers won their first two before dropping consecutive games to the Huskies.

Set to spend his first summer in Chatham, sophomore Georgia Tech product Buck Farmer threw a gem against Austin Peay to extend the Atlanta Regional. Farmer fanned nine in a complete game effort in which he yielded only one earned run and five hits. Farmer needed 121 pitches to get the win, but walked just two Austin Peay batters. The sophomore will head to Cape Cod coming off a season in which he went 11-3 with a 2.68 ERA for the Yellow Jackets. Mississippi State advanced out of the Atlanta Regional with a win over Georgia Tech in Sunday's nightcap.

Maine fell in the Chapel Hill Regional, but threatened briefly on the back of a 2011 Chatham Anglers righty. Sophomore Jeff Gibbs tossed eight innings of two-hit baseball and gave up just one run in a win over Florida International. Gibbs, who improved to 8-5 on the season, struck out eight and walked only three in the near-complete game performance. Future Angler Alex Calbrick also stepped up at the plate in Maine's only regional victory. The Canadian went 2-4 and scored a run to help the Black Bears earn a 4-1 win.

The Anglers will receive one West Coast pitcher sooner than expected, as UCLA was upset in its own regional. Closer Nick Vander Tuig embarks on a trip to the Cape after closing out for Gerritt Cole, the first overall pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft who gave up 11 hits over 7.3 innings pitched in his lone weekend start.

Vander Tuig finished off the 3-0 Bruin loss without giving up a run in just over an inning of work. In three appearances over the weekend, the freshman gave up two runs and registered less than three full innings of work.

Eleven Chatham Anglers were bounced from the Regionals last weekend, but six play on. Keep an eye out for present Anglers playing with Cal, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina as the road to Omaha continues in the coming weeks.
