Former A's and Current Prospects Wrap Up AFL Play

by Anglers Media Team, 11-30-2010

Former A's and Current Prospects Wrap Up AFL Play It's finally time to relax and enjoy the offseason for six former A's who recently wrapped up their time in the prestigious Arizona Fall League, with two sporting some new championship regalia. Nationals prospect Sammy Solis ('08) and Diamondbacks prospect Bryan Shaw ('07) led the Scottsdale Scorpions to their first League Championship, with Solis earning the win as the team's starter in a 3-2 victory over the Peoria Javelinas.

Solis, making six appearances for the Scorpions (five starts), compiled a 2-0 record and a 3.80 ERA, allowing 10 earned runs over 23.2 innings of work with 12 strikeouts and seven walks. In his championship start, Solis allowed just one earned run with three strikeouts over four innings of work.

Shaw, who also saw action in the Championship game, compiled an 0-1 record with a 3.48 ERA over nine appearances out of the bullpen for the Scorpions. The right hander tossed one scoreless inning in the final contest of the season, and allowed just four earned runs with six strikeouts through 10.1 innings of work over the course of the 2010 campaign.

James Avery, who spent time between three levels of the Reds system this past season, had a rough go of it with the Peoria Saguaros. Avery posted a 7.04 ERA over nine appearances (two starts), allowing 12 earned runs on 21 hits over 15.1 innings of work, walking seven batters and striking out 10.

2008 alum Grant Green, fresh off a 20-home run season with the Class A Stockton Ports, saw action in just 13 games for the Phoenix Desert Dogs and was held to just a .200 batting average with no home runs and only three runs batted in. The 23 year-old shortstop and right handed hitter did, however, post a .273 average against left handed pitchers.

Recently added to the Philadelphia Phillies 40-man roster, '06 alum Matt Rizzotti enjoyed an outstanding fall season in Arizona, posting a .333 batting average over 19 appearances with the Mesa Solar Sox. He knocked in 12 runs and drew 22 walks, second-most in the league behind Mariners prospect Dustin Ackley who drew 26.

Wrapping up the list of former A's is Brooks Brown. The '05 alum and Detroit Tigers prospect did not fare well in his seven starts, compiling a 1-3 record and a 12.05 ERA, allowing 25 earned runs on 37 hits over 18.2 innings with 13 strikeouts and 11 walks.

These six young men will get a much-needed three months off after toiling through nearly 200 games this past year, and will report to Spring Training in February.
