West Takes All-Star Game, Oropesa Finishes Second in Home Run Contest

by Anglers Media Team, 07-29-2010

West Takes All-Star Game, Oropesa Finishes Second in Home Run Contest The West was able to shut down an East lineup consisting of the Cape League's top two hitters in a 5-0 victory in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game at Fenway Park. Wareham's Zach Wilson (Arizona State) was named the West's MVP while Yarmouth-Dennis' Caleb Ramsey (Houston) was named MVP for the East squad.

The teams played to a scoreless tie through four innings before the West broke through in the top of the fifth, as Wareham's Tyler Bream (Liberty) scored from third base on a wild pitch by Harwich's Braden Kapetyn (Kentucky), who took the loss. The West would add another run in the top of the sixth when Casey McElroy (Auburn) of Hyannis drove in a run with a single to center for a 2-0 lead.

The West would add three more runs in the top of the seventh off of Chatham ace Logan Verrett (Baylor). Wareham's Tony Caldwell (Auburn) led off the inning with a triple to right field and would score on a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Wilson doubled to left field to score KC Serna (Oregon) of Falmouth, who had walked, for a 4-0 lead. Cotuit's Jordan Leyland (UC Irvine) followed with a single to center field to score Wilson to finish the scoring.

Chatham was represented by four All-Stars, led by Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt) who was the starting first baseman for the East. Westlake finished with one hit in three at bats, a single to right field to lead off the bottom of the third. Catcher Joe Pavone (Connecticut) entered the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning and went 0-1 with a walk. Aside from Verrett, Derek Self (Louisville) also pitched for the East squad, pitching a scoreless third inning.

Before the game, Rick Oropesa (USC) represented the Anglers in the home run derby and finished second, behind Cotuit's Paul Hoilman (East Tennessee State). Oropesa hit two home runs into the bullpens in right field in the first round to advance to the finals. Oropesa again hit two home runs in the finals, including one long shot over the Red Sox bullpen, but it wasn't enough as Hoilman followed with three home runs.
