Verrett Shuts Down Harbor Hawks, Pitches Anglers to Victory
Mark Ginther (Oklahoma St.) blasted his first home run of the season, and Logan Verrett (Baylor) was the picture of perfection Friday night as the Anglers cruised to a 5-1 victory over Hyannis at Veteran's Field. Chatham's record now stands at 10-5-1, as the Anglers remain in third place in the Eastern Division. Hyannis falls to 8-9 on the 2010 campaign, good for third best in the Western Division.

Chatham got on the board very early in the contest, scoring a run in the bottom of the first after Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) doubled to lead off the inning, and came around to score after Stephen Perez (Miami) reached on a throwing error by Hyannis shortstop Matt Williams (Liberty) to put the Anglers up 1-0.

Verrett held the Harbor Hawks' bats at bay through the next four innings, before getting three more runs of support in the fifth. First baseman Aaron Westlake (UNC) singled to lead off the inning, before being advanced to third after a walk and a single in the ensuing at-bats. Humphries flew out to center to bring Westlake home from third to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Anglers. After a strikeout by Perez, right fielder Peter Verdin (Georgia) singled to score Jacob Stallings (UNC), and a fielding error by Hyannis left fielder Tyler Thompson (Florida), who bobbled the ball as it came his way in left, allowed Chatham left fielder Jason Martin (San Jose St.) to score, upping the Anglers' advantage to 4-0.

Another Chatham run would come across in the sixth, as Ginther led off the inning with a solo home run, his first of the season. Verrett then closed out the seventh inning by retiring the side in order, and yielded to reliever Garrett Davis (UNC) to start the eighth. Verrett allowed only two base runners through his seven innings of work, striking out four and walking just one with no hits.

Davis allowed Dane Phillips (Oklahoma St.), the first batter of the inning, to reach with a walk, before being pulled for left-handed reliever Aaron Gates (Pepperdine). Gates then allowed a single by Charlie Thurber (Tennessee). A strikeout and a groundout put Phillips on third, before a wild pitch by Gates brought him home to give the Harbor Hawks their only run of the night. The game would end with Chatham taking the win by a score of 5-1.

Verrett picked up the win, now 2-0 on the season. Hyannis starter Kevin Brandt (East Carolina) was saddled with the loss, his second, after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

The Anglers remain at home Saturday night for the second game of a two-game home stand as the Harwich Mariners come to town for a 7pm start at Veteran's Field.
