Bourne's Late-Inning Offense Proves to be Too Much For Anglers
A two-run home run in the eighth by Travis Shaw (Kent State) gave visiting Bourne all the offense it would need to notch its third victory of the season, but a five-run ninth put the Braves ahead 8-2, handing the Anglers just their second loss of the 2010 season on Tuesday night at Veteran's Field.

Box Score

Second-year Angler Mike Dennhardt (Boston College) took the hill for Chatham for his second start of the season, and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up a single to Shaw to lead off the inning. He would retire the next three batters in order, and yield to Chris Munnelly (UNC) after striking out five and walking three. He would leave with a two-run lead after Garrett Smith (Boston College) and Bill Besinger (Babson) combined for back-to-back RBI hits in the second inning.

That lead would hold through the end of the seventh inning, despite a run coming across for the Braves off of a sacrifice fly by Tommy LaStella (Coastal Carolina). Phil Schreiber (Iowa) would be brought on to start the eighth, and after retiring the first two batters he faced, allowed a double by Daniel Bowman (Coastal Carolina) and a two-run home run on the ensuing at-bat by Shaw to give Bourne the 3-2 lead, which they would never relinquish.

Kenny Monteith (Winthrop) was brought on to start the ninth and walked leadoff batter Nick Ahmed (UConn). After a sacrifice bunt by Scott Woodward (Coastal Carolina), LaStella would reach on an error by Chatham right fielder Peter Verdin (Georgia). Monteith would then intentionally walk Ryan Wright (Louisville) before allowing a two-run single by Mike Nemeth (UConn). On the ensuing at-bat, Creede Simpson (Auburn) hammered an RBI double, before Shaw would drive in two more runs on a single just two batters later. Braves reliever Tony Zych (Louisville), in his second inning of relief, hit Jason Martin (San Jose St.) on the hand with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, then allowed a single by Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) to advance Martin to second before striking out Verdin to end the contest. Chatham's record now stands at 5-2-2.

Chatham will remain at home Wednesday night to face the visiting Falmouth Commodores for the second time this season. Joe Zimmerman is tabbed to start for the Anglers. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm, with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show beginning at 6:40pm.
