Anglers Top Brewster In Season Openeer
The Chatham Anglers started the 2010 season off on the right foot Monday night, walking away from Brewster with a 6-4 win over the Whitecaps.

Opposing starting pitcher Drew Gagnon dominated the Anglers lineup through the first 1 2/3 innings, striking out the first five batters he faced. Kevin Vance ended the series of Ks with a hard-hit double to right, and that got the Anglers' bats rolling.

Brian Humphries led off the 3rd with a single, then was brought home by Danny Paolini on an RBI single. An RBI single by Zack Jones in the 5th would give the Anglers a 2-0 lead, before the Whitecaps caught up to starter Mike Dennhardt and posted two runs of their own in the same inning after a leadoff solo home run by Tray Channing, and an RBI single John Andreali.

The score would only remain tied for a few short minutes, as the Chatham lineup finished a home run shy of the cycle in the 6th inning, driving in three runs on three hits, including an RBI triple by Paolini, who finished the afternoon 2-4 with two RBI, a walk and a run scored.

Zack Lebarron came on in relief of Dennhardt to start the bottom half of the 6th, and promptly allowed a run on two singles and three stolen bases before yielding to Kenny Monteith. A single off the right-handed reliever out of Winthrop University would bring home the second run of the inning before Monteith ended the Whitecaps threat with a strikeout and a fly out.

Brewster wouldn't score any more runs through the end of the contest, with reliever Phil Schreiber working two innings, striking out five, including all three batters he faced in the 8th. Matt Brazis entered in the 9th and retired the side in order to earn the save. Marc Ginther drove in Pete Verdin for the Anglers to record the team's last run. Ginther finished the day with a pair of RBI doubles in five at-bats, while Verdin made a number of nifty plays defensively in right field.

The Anglers remain on the road Tuesday night, taking on the Harwich Mariners at Whitehouse Field in a 7pm start. Harwich brings in a record of 0-1 after falling in Monday's opener at home to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Anglers Extra Pregame fires up at 6:40PM. Don't miss it!
