Chatham Makes Its Mark On The 2010 MLB Draft

by Anglers Media Team, 06-08-2010

Chatham Makes Its Mark On The 2010 MLB Draft The 2010 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft has concluded and the Chatham Anglers were well represented. A total of twenty-six former and current Chatham players were selected throughout the three-day draft led by former pitcher Matt Harvey (2008, 2009). Harvey was the first former Angler drafted when the New York Mets took him in the first round with the seventh overall pick Monday night. The Mystic, CT native was 7-2, 7-2, and 8-3 in his three seasons as a North Carolina Tar Heel. He follows Andrew Miller as the last Chatham/Carolina pitcher to go in the first round; Miller was selected by Detroit and was the sixth overall pick in 2006. Harvey went 1-1 with one save and a 0.83 ERA for Chatham in 9 appearances in 2008.

On Tuesday, more Anglers were selected and the second round saw two players drafted as the Washington Nationals selected former pitcher Sammy Solis (2008) out of San Diego with the 51st overall pick while the Tampa Bay Rays chose former Chatham pitcher Jake Thompson (2008, 2009) from Long Beach State fifteen spots later. Solis went 3-2 with a 2.41 ERA during his lone season in Chatham. He led San Diego with nine wins this season as he went 9-2 with a 3.42 ERA for the Toreros. Thompson compiled a 3-5 record during his two seasons with the Anglers and went 5-4 with a 5.16 ERA for Long Beach State this past season.

Fellow Long Beach State Dirtbag Devin Lohman (2008) became the fourth former Angler to be chosen within the first 100 picks as the Cincinnati Reds drafted the infielder in the third round (94th overall). Lohman was second on the Anglers '08 squad posting a .341 batting clip before suiting up in 2009 for the Orleans Firebirds. He led Long Beach State with a .404 batting average this season.

Kyle Blair (2008) joined his former Chatham and San Diego teammate Solis in the draft mix when the Cleveland Indians selected the pitcher in the fourth round (120th overall). Blair went 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA in the 2008 Cape League season and played for the Brewster Whitecaps in 2009. He was second on the San Diego staff with eight wins this past season while compiling a 0.83 ERA.

Two more former Anglers went in the sixth round as the Tampa Bay Rays took Virginia Tech pitcher Jesse Hahn (2009) with the 191st overall pick, three spots before the Atlanta Braves took Long Beach State infielder Joey Terdoslavich (2009). Hahn went 1-1 with a save and 5.28 ERA for the Anglers last season. He went 5-4 with a 3.70 ERA for the Hokies this past year. Terdoslavich hit .326 and led Long Beach State with seven home runs and 46 runs batted this past season. Last year he hit .234 for the Anglers and finished second on the team with 14 runs batted in.

The ninth round also saw two more former Anglers taken as South Carolina outfielder Whit Merrifield (2009) was selected by the Kansas City Royals (269th overall) while the St. Louis Cardinals chose Oklahoma State pitcher Tyler Lyons (2009) 20 spots later.
