Chatham's Fog in Midseason Form

Chatham Anglers
When the hardy crowd entered Veterans Field for the first game of 2009, they were anticipating seeing several new things. Most notably, they looked forward to seeing the Anglers playing the first game under their new name against the Wareham Gatemen. Also on display was the culmination of an extensive renovation project at Veterans Field. Unfortunately, Chatham's notorious fog wanted some of the opening night attention, and it stole all of it. Fog shrouded the field when Jake Thompson threw the game's first pitch, and it only grew worse until the game was called after just one full inning.

Thompson, a sophomore from Long Beach State, took the opening night ball as no stranger to Veterans Field. The Long Beach native pitched in Chatham last year, and was anxious to pick up where he left off. He allowed a leadoff single, before rallying to work out of the inning. In the bottom of the first, Chatham could only manage one baserunner off of Josh Mueller of Eastern Illinois, a two out walk to designated hitter Nick Schwaner.

With Chatham manager John Schiffner in Connecticut for medical reasons, pitching coach Tyler Kincaid and Wareham manager Cooper Farris, along with the umpires, decided to delay the game. After a half hour, the game was called. No makeup date has been announced.

Chatham returns to action Saturday night at Veterans Field against the Hyannis Mets. Boston College freshman Mike Dennhardt will make his first Anglers start against Notre Dame sophomore Cole Johnson. Dennhardt was 5-2 in his first season with the Eagles. The free broadcast on chathamanglers.com begins with the Anglers Extra pregame show at 6:40.
