Game 43 Preview: Chatham vs. Y-D

The stakes have never been higher for the 2022 Anglers than in their penultimate regular-season game, a matchup against Yarmouth-Dennis at 7 p.m. Monday at Veterans Field. Three points behind both Harwich and Orleans in the East Division, Chatham (13-20-9) will fall out of playoff contention with a loss. Y-D (19-16-7) leads the East Division but enters Monday's contest on a six-game losing streak.

Probable Pitchers

Roman Kimball (Notre Dame) will make his fourth start and fifth appearance with Chatham. The right-hander has not allowed an earned run (though he has allowed two unearned runs) in 17 innings and has struck out 26 batters. Kimball has walked seven batters over his past two starts but still holds a sub-one WHIP.

Drew Dowd will get the ball for the Red Sox. Dowd has logged a 2.07 ERA over 8.2 innings. All three of his appearances have been starts, but he has not completed more than three innings in any outing. The lefty has punched out 10 batters and walked three.

Chatham Players to Watch

Anthony Nunez (Tampa) went 2 for 4 in Chatham's loss to Harwich on Sunday. Over the past week, the switch-hitting infielder is batting .250 with four RBIs, all of which came on a pinch-hit grand slam on Tuesday.

Marcus Brown (Oklahoma State) went 1 for 4 with a walk on Sunday. Chatham's sure-handed shortstop has played in all but one game this season and leads the team in hits while being tied for the team lead in runs and steals.

Y-D Players to Watch

Cole Carrigg is fourth in the league in batting average, hitting .321 through 134 at-bats. The switch-hitting utility man has recorded a hit in all but one of the Red Sox's five matchups against Chatham this summer.

Jonathon Long has launched a team-leading five home runs this season, one of which came against Chatham on July 15. Long homered on Sunday and is 3 for 10 over his past three games.

Stat to Know ' 3.26

Y-D's pitching has been a staple of its strong season. With a 3.26 ERA, the Red Sox boast the third-lowest ERA in the league, even though their home field is one of the more hitter-friendly parks the Cape has to offer.

Last Time They Played

Chatham earned its first road win on July 16, beating Y-D 6-2 at Red Wilson Field in a game shortened to seven innings due to darkness. The Red Sox pounced on Anglers starter Cam Brown, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. However, Alex McFarlane allowed one hit over five shutout innings in a dominant effort out of Chatham's bullpen.

Guy Garibay Jr. (Rice) smacked a bases-clearing double in the top of the sixth to put Chatham ahead 4-2. The Anglers added two more runs on a sacrifice fly and an error in the top of the seventh.
