Game 17 Preview: Y-D at Chatham

Since reaching double-digits in hits against Brewster, Chatham hasn't amounted more than eight hits in four games. The eight hits came in a 4-4 tie against Hyannis, and the Anglers' have only decreased in each game since then, including a no-hit performance at Orleans.

Chatham returns to Veterans Field for the next two games, beginning against Yarmouth-Dennis.

Probable Pitchers

Chris Villaman (NC State) will take the mound for the Anglers, starting in Chatham's last matchup against Brewster. He allowed one hit and one run, striking out two batters. But Villaman still struggled finding command of the zone, walking five batters.

Grant Taylor will start for Y-D. He appeared last week against Chatham, allowing three hits in five innings. Taylor struck out six Angler bats, letting up one run. Taylor led Washington State with 71 strikeouts this season, including 54 in Pac-12 Conference play.

Chatham Players to Watch

Hayden Travinski (LSU) had two hits and two RBIs in his Chatham debut, including an RBI in the sixth inning to put the stamp on the win over the Whitecaps. He struck out once in Chatham's no-hitter, but has shown promise as one of the Anglers' best power hitters. Manager Tom Holliday said Travinski could be crucial in both the catcher and designated hitter roles, which will be necessary against the Red Sox's pitching staff.

Though Marcus Brown (Oklahoma State) said he would 'give it a go' tonight after exiting yesterday's game following a hit-by-pitch, Adonys Herrera (Western Oklahoma State) could come in at shortstop for the Anglers. Herrera has notched five hits so far this season, striking out six times in 11 games.

Y-D Players to Watch

Pascanel Ferreras led the Red Sox with two hits in their 3-2 win over Chatham, including a solo home run. Ferreras went yard one other time this season with a two-RBI homer in the Red Sox's season-opening tie against Orleans.

Michael Boeve is tied for fourth in the league with a .333 batting average in 39 at-bats. He had a season-high two RBIs with two hits in an 8-4 win over Bourne. Boeve notched 78 hits, including eight home runs at University of Nebraska Omaha in 2022.

Stat to Know ' 3

Chatham is tied with Wareham for the most amount of shutout losses this season with three. The Anglers have been shut out in their previous two games, losing 2-0 to Brewster before yesterday's 4-0 loss. Y-D was also shutout by the Whitecaps and Firebirds.

Last Time They Played

Villaman allowed one base runner in the first three frames, trading strong innings with Taylor. Villaman said he got repetitive with some pitches though, which Y-D took advantage of in the fourth inning, notching three hits while bringing in two runs.

Overall, the Anglers' pitchers held the Red Sox to three runs on seven hits. But the offense lacked, scratching across a single run in two separate innings in the loss.

'Hitting with two outs separates you from being just another player,' Holliday said. 'Striking out with people in scoring position, not making contact with runners at third base and less than two outs, those are obvious issues of concern for anybody in baseball, and we do it all the time.'
